2 October 2015 marked the 50th Anniversary of the formal establishment of Porirua as a city.
The 50th Gala Dinner Celebrations put on by Porirua City Council at Te Rauparaha Arena on Saturday 3 October 2015 offered the opportunity for the Council and the community to celebrate the city’s past, present and future and shine a regional and national spotlight on its attributes as a great place to live, work, play, visit, raise a family and operate a business. It was an occasion to remember for lots of reasons. And 50 people who have helped to make Porirua the city it is today were chosen to be honoured with a Civic Award.
All the guests were treated to a magnificent spectacle with glittering lighting and glittering people, music, dancing, live performances and fabulous food provided by Ruth Pretty.
Plimmerton Rotary is blessed by an association with some of these awardees, people in our community who offer help and advice to our club and are supportive of our efforts. Among these were Margaret Faulkner for her enormous drive for quality healthcare for Porirua residents and her advocacy for older people, John Cody for his forty years of work as a social advocate to improve the lives of Porirua people, Chris Kirk-Burnnand (who was overseas) for his very important philanthropic contributions to and active championing of Porirua City and Maureen Gillon (seen here with Jane Shaw) for her advocacy and vision for our city and her commitment to improving our health and education outcomes.
It was wonderful to celebrate with these and many more and to have the opportunity to thank them for the difference they have made in our city.
Perhaps the most exciting award of the evening from the point of view of Plimmerton Rotary and Te Ara Piko was that given to Ron Lucas, Chair of the Pathway Committee. Ron received his award for his championship, drive and commitment to making Te Ara Piko Pathway a reality for Porirua City. Ron’s comment is that he is extremely proud to have been selected for the award and acknowledges it is a recognition of the project, the pathway committee and all the members of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton.
At the club meeting on Tuesday 6 October, President Adrienne congratulated Ron and asked John to pass the club's congratulations on to Maureen.
