Welcome

President Bill welcomed members to the last meeting of the year and told us that he is finally celebrating the move into his new home - just in time for Christmas.

Viewpoint

Leigh Corner gave us his Viewpoint tonight. He asked, 'Why am I concerned with the decrease in biodiversity, not just in New Zealand but globally?' He then went on to explain that we are dependent on the biosphere, that is, all living things on earth, for our air, clean water, and the food we eat. There is a great diversity of species in the biosphere and they are found in a myriad of ecosystems. The stability of the biosphere and these ecosystems is contingent on the complexity that results from diversity. The greater the biodiversity, the healthier and more stable are the ecosystems. If there is a sudden change in the environment of the communities, the stability may change and the community may be destroyed.

What’s coming up in December and beyond?

Remember that we're on holiday on 22, 29 December 2020, 5 and 12 January 2021.

Friday Frolics will still take place on 8 January 2021 at 5.00 pm. The venue for this month is the Sandbar Pub and Restaurant on Mana Esplanade.

On Tuesday 19 January 2021 for those who didn't leave the area for their holidays and for those who have already returned, this will be a social evening. Kay will send out an email in the New Year with information about the venue and time.

The first formal meeting of the year will be on Tuesday 26 January.

Contrary to what was previously suggested, the Robbie Burns Night that was scheduled for 26 January 2021 will now take place during the winter. Kay will let us know the revised details in due course.

Nick Walmsley has several speakers in the melting pot and information will appear in the Rotary Calendar and in the Events page as soon as these are firmed up.

This week’s happenings

Plimmerton Inner Wheel President Brenda has kindly sent us their December 2020 newsletter which you can read here.

We've received information from Christine Hurley who spoke to us recently about Support Rotary to Give Every Child A Future. She's sent a flyer asking Rotarians and friends to download one or more greetings cards and to make a donation to this cause. Here is the flyer.

Snippets

President Bill thanked those who organised the Christmas Party last week - Euon, Kay, Bruce, Philip, and Phillip.

Michael Parker reported that he had received news from Laurie Boytard, a former Exchange Student. Sadly she reports that she has a clot on her brain and has been in hospital for sixteen days. She is hoping that her health improves soon so that she can study for her Masters.

Donna reported that a family in Wellington has donated money to Plimmerton Rotary to buy clothes for the kids at Ascot Park Kindy, hopefully, kids who will move up to study at Rangikura Primary School where some members are helping 5-year-olds with their reading. The Committee has developed a relationship with KMart who have very generously supported this project. Rangikura has agreed to store surplus clothing until it is needed. The kids at the Kindy spent many hours producing a beautiful card to present to Donna and her team.

Parting thought

Bryan Waddle's parting thought was delivered, in his absence, by Euon, 'Have you ever noticed The Evening News is where they begin with "Good Evening" and then proceed to tell you why it isn't?'

No meetings until 19 January, so no roster for the remainder of 2020
