Visitors

President Denise welcomed our speaker, District Governor Elect, Wayne Gordon who was visiting to talk about and discuss the proposed pilot for the Regionalisation Project. Unfortunately, much of the meeting took place in the dark but Wayne did a great job with lights from various devices and the lights came on again just before the end of the meeting to make question time easier.

President's comments

Denise opened the meeting with a quote from RI President Jennifer Jones. 'Imagine a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day, knowing that we can make a difference'.

She made the following announcements:

  • There will be no President's table this year. Instead, the speaker host will pick a table. Denise encourages members to have discussions to include hospitality, kindness, and care for others.
  • The Board's first meeting took place on 18 July and future 2022-2023 meetings were scheduled for the year with every other meeting being virtual.
  • The Ethify pilot was being discussed and has been progressing, albeit at a slower uptake than is desirable. A presentation by Phillip at the District Changeover generated little interest. The Board acknowledged both Phillip Reidy and Mike Scott who, for more than a year have given of their time, passion, energy, intelligence, and professional networks to bring about a charitable partnership that could generate significant cash flow. The next steps will be for Denise and a small team to meet with Phillip and Mike and plot 'where to from here?' for the future of the pilot.

The speaker said …

It was hard enough for Wayne to do his presentation in the semi-dark and a pity that he couldn't use technology to amplify his points. It was also impossible to take notes but he has been kind enough to provide his presentation, and here it is.  Regionalisation_Pilot

Viewpoint

In view of the fact that most of the meeting took place in the dark, Bill's viewpoint will be saved until another day.

What’s coming up in July and beyond?

On Tuesday, 26 July, Will Pennington, the Project Director at Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities (old Housing NZ) was to have talked to us about the regeneration of Eastern Porirua. However, he is now not able to come but has been rescheduled for an evening in September. Instead, Kay is organising a Social Evening.

On the following Tuesday, 2 August, President Denise will induct a new member, Dieter Timmermann.

The Drinks and Nibbles that were to have taken place on Sunday 31 July have been cancelled because of the illnesses currently being threatened by the new Covid variants.

Notices

Wendy reminded members that the eighth Primary School Leadership Awards will take place at Elim Church on Monday 8 August from 10.30-12.00 and encouraged members to come and enjoy the event. Please let her know if you can come so that she can reserve the right number of seats.

On behalf of Treasurer Bruce, Denise informed members that subs have been increased to $370 and are now due. Bruce will be sending out invoices shortly.

President-Elect Tania asked members to turn up next week with pockets full of gold coins as there will be a raffle. these raffles will help us to keep our subs as low as possible.

This week’s happenings

At District Changeover. District Governor Marilyn urged us all to “Ride the Train” for Polio on 4 September. You may not be able to read the brilliant by-line on the attached photo but it reads, 'Ride the train to enable others to walk'. Food for thought. The train will depart from Paekakariki at 7.50 am and will travel to Taihape and back. It will be stopping at Levin, Palmerston North, and Marton and people can join at those locations. The cost is $160 per person and you can make your bookings using this link. Although only two countries have had Polio cases this year, the Polio virus has been found in sewage in London. While no cases have been reported there, officials are keeping a very close watch on this possibly disastrous situation.

Past Secretary Graeme has posted his final minutes of the Board and Charitable Trust and you can find them in the right column of the Intranet.

And you can catch up with the Plimmerton Inner Wheel July newsletter here.

The Almoner said …

Almoner John reports that Angus is now living with his daughter Beth in Masterton, as his family thinks he needs more care now. Thank you to all those members who have visited him at School Road Plimmerton over recent years.

There have been many members of the Club who have been laid low with COVID over recent times, and as far as I know, all seem to have recovered without serious side effects. If anyone needs support of any kind, do not hesitate to call John.

Parting thought

Bruce gave us Colin Whyte's Parting Thought this week with a quote that could easily be attributed to AB coach Ian Foster this week. 'Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Don't walk beside me either. Just leave me the heck alone.'
