Visitors

We were the visitors tonight when we joined Tawa and Johnsonville Rotary Clubs as guests of Porirua Club for a network meeting. After a welcome from incoming President, Paula Williams and a welcome from Area Governor Kath Beattie, Past District Governor, Marion Johnson talked about membership under the main headings of:

  • Who do we want to attract?
  • How are we perceived?
  • What are the barriers?
  • What can we change?

After some questions from the floor, each of the four Presidents spoke for a few moments about what is happening in their club and shared some of the exciting projects each is involved with.

Dinner following the meeting was a great opportunity to mix and mingle with friends from the other clubs and catch up on news and views. The raffle was drawn and the proceeds of $165 will go to Wellington Children's Hospital.

The general consensus was that networking in this way was both enjoyable and informative, and thanks were expressed to Porirua Club for hosting the meeting.

What’s coming up in June and beyond?

The next Drinks and Nibbles, organised by Chris Garrett, will be held at Wendy's home on Sunday 30 May from 4.00-6.00 pm.

There will be a Forum at the meeting on Tuesday 1 June when President-Elect Kay will be seeking input from members. If you want to participate in the future of the club, this is your opportunity so please come along and have your say.  This will be the most important meeting for the 2021-2022 year. It is every member's chance to comment on projects, activities, and direction for the coming year. Please help our Club to be vibrant and enjoyable. The projects being suggested are based on Kay's "Coffee Chats" with members. There are a couple of meeting format issues to be voted on and a possible new meeting component to be discussed. Remember that Rotary is based on two things, Service and Fellowship, so make sure you have your say in our next year's direction. A draft project plan will be available for every attending member and the 2021-22 Directors will give a brief overview of their aims for the year.

On Tuesday 8 June we will celebrate Robbie Burns with an evening of Scottish fun, music, laughter. and a lot more. We will be entertained! Our various guests will provide us all with an evening to remember. This is definitely a partners' night. Members from the Rotary Club of Porirua have been invited too. It's nearing the end of 'Bill's year' so this is an opportunity to come and support him so that his year ends on a high note. Please give visitors' names or apologies to The Professionals by  10.00 am on Monday 7 June as usual, although if you know your visitors by Friday 4 June, that would be helpful for Philip and the caterers.

This week’s happenings

DG Gillian Jones has drawn our attention to the launch of Rotary International's most recent Area of Focus, that of Protecting our Environment. This launch is on 4 June at 8.00 pm and includes one of District 9940's members, Dr. Roger Blakely, a member of the Rotary Club of Wellington. This flyer shows you how to connect to be part of this event.

DGN Marilyn Stevens has asked us to publish the RYPEN 2021 report, which you can read here. As we know, David does an outstanding job of organising RYPEN for us each year and next year's date has already been pencilled in with Porirua College, four of whose students will be speaking to us on 15 June.

As an aside, have members caught up with the fact that the three young students from Porirua College who formed 'Le Art' and sang for us at the 2018 Primary School Leadership Awards and at our celebration of 125 years of Women's Suffrage in NZ at Pataka, also in 2018, reached the final of  Popstars on Monday evenings on TV2. They have rebranded themselves as A.R.T. and they are amazingly talented.

Who’s on duty for the next month?

If you're a late 'no show' please tell President Bill.
