President Euon welcomed Mike Scott who is coming back into the fold after quite a long absence. He also welcomed Cris who will probably now not leave until September because he cannot get flights back to Chile (which may be just as well with the number of cases being reported there every day).
Euon thanked the Zoom Team in the form of Peter Sinke and Kay Phillips, for organising our Virtual Meetings during lockdown.
He farewelled Philip Mottram and thanked him for all his hard work on the rosters and wished him and Julia all the best in Palmerston North.
Viewpoint
Joe Perera gave us the Viewpoint tonight. He said that 'We need to phase out fossil fuels, and electric cars are an integral part of a greener future. But a green future built on the backs of exploited children in the Democratic Republic of Congo is no kind of progress.
The Speaker said ...
Although it's always good to hear excellent speakers at our Rotary meeting, this was the first time we'd met in person since the Level 4 lock-down so there was no speaker tonight. Instead, members reunited, caught up, told stories about their lock-down experiences, and generally relaxed in each other's company.
This week's happenings
The Rotary Club of Wellington, in partnership with Epilepsy New Zealand, has sponsored a comprehensive guide to Epileptic Seizures and how to administer First Aid. One person in twenty will have an epileptic seizure in their life and witnessing a seizure can be traumatic when the observer can feel helpless. Donna, as Youth Director of Plimmerton, was asked by AG Adrienne to deliver the guide to all our local schools, a task she has now completed. Here she is delivering a copy to Mike Forrest, Principal of Plimmerton School.

Euon reported that Treasurer Bruce has received back $3,400 in meal refunds which he has donated to the Foundation.

The Almoner said ...
The Almoner said ...Ian Catherall's funeral was held at St Barnabas Church on Mana Esplanade today, Thursday, 18 June, at 11.00 am. Ian was a member of Plimmerton Rotary for very many years and its President in 1983-1984. He played a large part in Plimmerton's Rotaract club. The Church was packed and he was clearly remembered fondly by the large number of Rotarians who were there. There were lovely speeches from his family who recounted many stories about his life, including some of his loves from his younger days.
Almoner John reports that, like us all, both Spencer and Angus are aging, but doing well really. Spencer’s birthday today, 18 June, makes him 91 years young. He is a little hard of hearing but very happy to talk. Angus's mobility is not good but then again he's very happy to talk. He has a wheelchair and I am sure when the weather is right would be happy for one of us to push him around for an outdoor visit nearby. I am sure both would appreciate a visit and chat and I suggest a phone call to organise a suitable time would be all that is needed.
What's coming up in June and beyond?
Next week, 23 June, we are very fortunate that Matthew Hooton, Political Pundit, has kindly agreed at short notice to come and speak to us. Cris Suarez' was, as you know, going to tell us about his International Exchange in New Zealand. This was postponed but is now back on the calendar as the Chilean Consulate unexpectedly has a flight leaving next Friday. In the circumstances, Cris will give us a shortened talk and we will all get an opportunity to wish him a very fond goodbye. Partners and visitors will be very welcome (remember to book additional dinners).
Changeover on Tuesday 30 June will be at Top Taste, the Chinese Restaurant in Porirua at 6.30 for 7.00 pm. A form was sent round and members were encouraged to put their names down quickly as numbers are limited to 70 people. Bill lived in Shanghai for three years and is particularly attracted to Chinese culture. Members are encouraged to wear something which relates to Chinese culture, perhaps to the year they were born.
The new Rotary year will begin on 7 July and here is just a taste of what's coming up.
On 7 July, President Bill McAulay will chair a meeting called 'Opening Opportunities in 2020 - the New Normal' which will set out the planning direction and projects for the Rotary year.
14 July will be our first Committee night for the New year.

Philip Mottram gave us the Parting Thought tonight from John Lennon who said, 'Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it will always get you the right ones'.
