Welcome

President Denise welcomed members to Committee Night and mentioned that she will be welcoming the AIG planters at 9.00 on Wednesday morning as part of a Rotary nationwide planting in Forests of Peace and Remembrance. She and Bill urged members to come along and help by showing Rotary support. She quoted Dr. Leigh Corner who says that we need to address global biodiversity loss with the same urgency and manner of cooperation as the response to Covid-19.

Stop Press: Dexter has been testing regularly but woke feeling grotty this morning (Wednesday) and has tested Positive. President Denise suggests that members monitor their health in the next few days, particularly those who are immunocompromised, and keep an eye on how they are feeling.

Denise reminded us to give some thought to the 50th Anniversary celebrations of our Club next year. The Board will be meeting on Monday, 14 November to consider some proposals and asked members to put their thinking caps on to come up with ideas. We might consider advertising that we could display around the City; we could find ways to recognise past members and ways to look towards the future.

Viewpoint

David Knight gave us the Viewpoint tonight. He told us a long story about a self-made man called Rich and concluded with the advice that if you want to get to Heaven, don't be a Dick. Yu can read it here

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

Next week, 15 November, former District Governor, Simon Manning, will talk to us about preparation for ourselves and our families around death and dying. Simon says that, although some might regard this subject as potentially depressing, it will be far from it.

The Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Friday 18 November. Chris has arrangements well in hand and would still appreciate some help so please get in touch with him if you can lend a hand.

After all the work that Allan and Barb devoted to the two major events, they haven't finished yet and are now working hard towards the Children's Christmas Party on Tuesday 6 December. Please click on this link to see all the details.

You can find details about all future events here as usual.

This week’s happenings

Each year, the Rotary Club of Plimmerton presents Service Above Self Awards to senior students at Aotea College. President Denise attended the Award Ceremony and had this to say. 'Rotary gave me an early Christmas gift, when I attended the Aotea College Senior Academic Awards to present the Plimmerton Rotary Service Above Self awards to  year 11, 12,13 students. You can read her full report and see the photos of the recipients here.

There is lots of news in the Plimmerton Inner Wheel Newsletter this month as always, with a reminder about the upcoming IWNZ Conference hosted by our District NZ294. It will be a fun packed Wellington weekend to look forward to.

You may notice that the "Apologies" notice in the right column of your Update has been temporarily removed this week. This is because the details have changed. We will put up the new information by next week. In the meantime, if you are an apology, please ring Philip Whearty direct instead of Professionals.

The Almoner said …

Rhondda says she is fine and feeling well. She's out of hospital and she'll be back at Rotary some time after 18 November - tremor free - much earlier than expected and looking forward to seeing everybody.

Graeme continues to make steady progress.

The Outside World

The Rotary Club of Göttingen-Sternwarte teamed up with the Production School Göttingen, a trades-oriented institution for teens, to harvest about 2 tons of apples and turn them into nearly 400 gallons of juice. The Apfelfest project culminated in October 2021 with the juice being donated to elementary schools or sold, raising more than $3,300 for End Polio Now. “The juice is amazing — a sweet-sour note, pure apple flavors,” reports club member Sönke Jaek. “And the dry apple mash was used to feed game such as deer and boar. They loved it.” Club members also serve as tutors and assist the students in writing resumes, finding internships, and applying for jobs.

And with the theme of our 50th Anniversary celebration in 2023 in mind, District 9620 will celebrate 100 years of serving its local and international community next year. The centenary provided an opportunity for Rotarians to reflect upon their achievements since 1923, when the Rotary Club of Brisbane was chartered. They say that it would be difficult to put an exact figure on the amount of funds raised for the community or to calculate the many thousands of hours donated by Rotarians to improve the lives of their fellow Queenslanders. The centenary also gives them the opportunity to ‘Imagine’ the future, not only to continue with the many established programs but to plan and commence new impactful and dynamic programs servicing a new generation in a transforming world.

Parting thought

Dieter Timmerman gave us the Parting Thought tonight with a quote from C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: essays on Theology. “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”
