The speaker said …

Tricia Walbridge and the Rotary Club of Wellington are seeking students for the Outward Bound Mind Body & Soul course for 16-18-year-olds for 2019. You may like to read Jenny's report on what Tricia had to say.

The Porirua Civic Awards recognise Porirua citizens for their outstanding voluntary service to the community. A significant amount of information  about Wendy Betteridge was collated and a nomination was sent in. We were delighted when we heard it had been successful and Wendy was duly surprised. The ceremony took place on Monday, and the seven awardees for 2018 were recognised for their varied services to our community.

The Outside World

Adrienne Murray is in Rarotonga, helping with the handover of the Tranzit bus which has been converted into a mobile health clinic with medical equipment. We look forward to a full report when Adrienne returns home.

Last weekend Donna took sports balls and literacy kits to Melbourne to go in a container to Balibo, in Timor L'Este.

There is a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Vancouver Island in BC, Canada, and Upper Washington State in USA beginning on 9 September 2018. Please contact Peter Lillico if you would like to participate. Friendship Exchanges are a really good way to see an area very cost-effectively. The main cost is return airfares. You are not like a tourist because you are being hosted by local Rotarians in their own home surrounds.

Visitors

It was good to see Tania Woodcock again before she is inducted on 3 July.

This week’s happenings

You will have received your invitation from Adrienne to the District and Whanganui Changeovers. Please remember that registration by 22 June is essential.

The Inner Wheel newsletter for June is now loaded onto our site and you can find it here. They celebrated their Changeover on 19 June when President Chris handed over to President-elect Janet.

Following submissions last week from Phillip Reidy and Richard Sherwin on the Porirua City Council's Long-term Planning process, it was agreed that the Council would provide an additional $350,000 in 2020/21 to complete Te Ara Piko around Pauatahanui Inlet in partnership with Plimmerton Rotary. History has guided the planning for the fourth stage of the pathway from Motukaraka Point to Kakaho Stream and the contractors have already set up shop and turned the first sod.

PE Donna Reed tells us that she met Ricardo and John Milkins, son of cameraman Gary Cunningham, in Melbourne over the weekend. She was there donating literacy kits and soccer balls for ongoing shipment to the Rotary and Balibo Community project.

What’s coming up in June and beyond?

Next week, 26 June, we will be celebrating Changeover. Please remember to ring in to Professionals if you are coming. There will be a ring round.

On 3 July, Pamela Meekings-Stewart will be talking to us principally about the changes that occur when the Pleiades appear in the morning sky in mid-winter. This will be a partners' night.

Movie tickets for the Balibo movie fundraiser on 18 July are $25 to Plimmerton Trust account 101563 060565 0115702 00. Add your name and let Donna know how many tickets you want. Proceeds will go to the roof of the school being constructed in Belola.
