The Speaker said ...

President-Elect, Donna, and incoming Assistant Governor, Adrienne, came back from Suth Pacific President-Elect Training, brimming with ideas for the coming Rotary year. Here are some of them.

Snippets

Is there anyone who is willing and able to support Rotary Youth Exchange and the young people involved by becoming a host parent? Please let Ken or Donna know by next week at the latest. If we are unable to find three or four host parents then we will not be able to have a student next year.

We are now at the second to last stage of the build of Te Ara Piko on the north side of the Inlet. The Committee feels that is no longer needed for planning or organising events for this. In fact, we only need to fundraise for perhaps another two years. It is hard for the committee members to make a difference going forward and it has been decided that the current committee will stand down and a new fundraising committee of two or three people will be formed.
Sincere thanks are offered to the team for all their hard work and to Ron Lucas and our previous member, Roger Fitzpatrick, for putting this major project on the books.

The Transmission Gully Fundraiser has been deferred until next summer when there will be more to see and hopefully good weather back again. The date in February is yet to be confirmed and is dependent on other major events in Porirua.

As 7 March is International Women's Day, Adrienne could not let it pass without a few quotes from inspirational and influential women.

'Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.' - Helen Keller

'Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.' - Golda Meir

'The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.' - Amelia Earhart

'What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.' - Jane Goodall

This week’s happenings

Year 13 Rotary Service Above Self Award recipient at Aotea College,  Ben Sawrey, has taken on the responsibility of engaging in a wide range of extracurricular activities and is always willing to help in the college and the wider community. He is an intermediate youth group leader, organising and facilitating meetings every Friday night. He is also a member of the Secondary Students Choir representing New Zealand in Hong Kong and Shanghai, an active participant in the Coffee @ Charlie’s Aotea Jazz Band, a pivotal member of the Rugby Union 1st XV,  Dragon Boating and JNS Barbershop Group and Aotearoar Boy’s barbershop chorus and Aotearoar Nationals.  He has also been a leader of Kapa Haka. Ben has already secured NCEA Level Three merit endorsement. In addition, Ben was a recipient of a Porirua Youth Award in August of last year, valued at $1500, in recognition of his outstanding contribution and leadership in the Arts. He has invited us to a concert later in the year. More about that later.
