Visitors

The guest speaker, Ed Forsman, was welcomed by Past President Chris Garrett, as well as several visitors : spouses Anne-Marie Garrett, Cheryl Perera, and  Joy Tongs and former Rotarian  Jenny Dawson,

The speaker said …

This week’s speaker was Ed Forsman, an ICT specialist who has worked extensively in the Energy sector. It was one of the most informative and effective presentations reporter Mike Doig has heard at the club, or anywhere else for that matter, and Joe Perera should be congratulated for bringing it about.

You can read Mike's report of this interesting talk here.

Viewpoint

Tania gave us the Viewpoint tonight.

The thoughtful presentation talked about the trap that organisations like Rotary can fall into where passion can often over-ride pragmatism. Her conclusion was that organisations should stick to their core service delivery, work where they can collaboratively, base their decisions on evidence and prioritise spending by assessing  community needs, the ability of the organisation  to  deliver over time and under what conditions.

What’s coming up in March and beyond?

Next week, 22 March, we will hear from two Rotarians, Richard Whatman, who will tell us about the Community Wealth Building Project that is being piloted in Porirua, and Richard Norman who was involved in the Rotary NZ Centenary project: a History of Rotary in NZ 1921-2021. This well-reviewed book is available from Richard at $50 per copy. Those interested please bring cash.  This will be a very full meeting as we are having a tribute to Ross Garner which many of you will want to hear, and also inducting our new member, Bruce Phillips, transferring from the Rotary Club of Honiara. This is definitely a partners' and friends' night.

The following week is our Annual Bowls Night at the Whitby Bowling Club. If you haven't already, please advise Bryan Waddle if you are attending, with numbers, so the programme and the catering can be finalised. Bryan has a Plan B if the weather is inclement so come along and have fun as we all do when Bryan is organising one of his "social" events. This one is in memory of Les Austing who arranged the Bowls Night for us for many years. Another night to bring partners, spouses and friends.

Several of our members are either self-isolating or keeping away from the rest of the world as much as possible, including Peter Jackson (and Jenny), Bill MacAulay and Graham Craig (and Annette). President Kay was in close contact most of last week with  Covid-positive friend and although she has tested negative she felt she should not come near you all this week.

The Almoner said …

That Annette Austing would probably enjoy visitors now.  Peter and Linda Sinké are continuing to battle Covid-19 and are quite tired.

Comings and Goings

President-Elect Denise reminded members that the District 9940 Annual Conference is to be held on 8-9 April. This is a virtual conference and so you may wish to attend this new concept for our District. For further details please click here.

Several members are enjoying golf and other delights around New Zealand: couples Couch, Blick and Wallace to name three. Wendy Betteridge is loving watching hockey in NSW.

Parting thought

Last week Michael gave us the Viewpoint tonight which was inspired in some way by the words of the Dalai Lama. He said, 'In our present circumstances no one can afford to assume someone else will solve t their problems. Every individual has a responsibility to seek to inspire friends and family alike; to be their best selves. To give more than they consume back into the communities they live in.' (the Deputy Editor's apologies for omitting this last week, Michael.)

Rachel gave the parting thought this week on behalf of Donna, saying - “In ancient Greece, tossing an apple to a girl was a traditional proposal of marriage. Catching it meant she accepted”.
