Visitors

President Bill welcomed our guest speaker, Tony Sutorius (guest of Tania!) Gary Nicholson and Rosie Smith, guests of Wendy. He also welcomed back Keith Michaels whom we haven't seen for some time and Honorary Members, Les Austing and Jim Dearsly.

Viewpoint

Wendy gave us the Viewpoint tonight. In the frenetic lives we lead, she said, – and which have sneaked up on us gradually over the years so that it felt totally normal – some of us might have misplaced who we truly are. We have to know who we are before we can work out what we can do and what we can have. Her Viewpoint is that we remember how much time we had during Level 4 lockdown to be a lot kinder to ourselves and each other.

The speaker said …

Tony Sutorius runs a film-making company called Unreal Films. He started by making a documentary in 1994 about firefighting but has since directed feature films and other documentaries. His most recent doco is about the Independence Referendum in Bougainville, which was held in 2019. As Mike said in his report, we should invite Tony back to show us the full film and answer more questions.

This week’s happenings

One of our club member's family is working on a University project that is looking towards creating a solution to reduce the negative mental health impacts of Climate Change. Like all projects, information is required, so if you would like to help you might invest four minutes in the survey. Here are the details we have received. As part of the Smart Seeds (a design-led innovation programme in Christchurch), our team is working towards creating a solution to reduce the negative mental health impacts of Climate Change. Fill out the form here.

Here is the August edition of the Rotary District 9940 Newsletter if you didn't get your copy any other way.

Snippets

President Bill took the opportunity to show some slides prepared by Phillip Reidy that gave an overview of the sixth annual Primary School Leadership Awards that took place on 10 August. He described it as a great success and, as confirmed by the feedback that has been received already, the best event so far with over 400 people present. He congratulated Wendy and the team who had put it all together and presented her with a beautiful bouquet. Mike has written an excellent report of the occasion. As he says, this was another great event for the club: well organised, well-attended, inspirational and a splendid showcase for what Rotary can do. Agnes Talivai's speech is posted in full as are the names and photos of all the students who were honoured. A sample of many of the 274 wonderful photos taken by Mark Tantrum are well worth seeing. You can find them in our Gallery.

Postponed -  the Love Local Expo that was to have been held on Saturday 15 August from 10.00 am till 4.00 pm at Te Rauparaha Arena. When we know a new date, Kay will start the organisation again.

What’s coming up in August and beyond?

The new outbreak of Covid-19 outside managed isolation may put future plans in jeopardy. If any of the following events cannot take place, we will notify you by email.

This is a weekly reminder to check out Nick's new Plimmerton Rotary Calendar - mentioned on our Home page.

There's an ongoing invitation on the Events page to volunteer to help with planting and weeding with the Friends of Taupo Swamp. All future dates are set out, the next being this Thursday 13 August from 9.00 am-12.00 pm.

This Friday 14 August at 5.00 pm, was to have been our second Friday Frolics at the Supply Room, Mana Esplanade. As numbers there on a Friday night could possibly exceed 100, we have decided to cancel the Frolics this month.

At our meeting next week, 18 August, you will be called upon to Consider your Verdict

The first Guess Who's Coming to Dinner has been scheduled for Saturday 22 August at 5.50 pm and will start with the main draw at the home of Allan and Barbara Nichols.  Kay will send out more details soon.

The District Governor's visit will take place on 1 September and will be a visit with a difference. We are going to showcase one or two of our projects for her,  dinner will be informal, and we will enjoy a special speaker who will be organised by Bryan

You can find future events on the Events page.
