Visitors

President Bill welcomed our speaker for tonight, Professor Justin Hodgkiss, Wendy's visitors, Paul Warby and Faeeza Warby Mohamed, and Honorary members, Gwyn Akeroyd, Les Austing, and Peter Turner.

Viewpoint

Bob Austin gave us the Viewpoint this evening. He said, 'My message is that when you have a down time, reflect on the golden times we have had in our generation. Positive thoughts will help you return to normality.'

The speaker said …

You can read Mike's report on the speech that Professor Justin Hodgkiss, of Victoria University and the McDiarmid Institute delivered last night. As Mike says, Justin’s talk was fascinating and optimistic in the face of the monumental challenges of sustainability and climate change.

This week’s happenings

Here is the October Newsletter from the Zonta Club of Mana. It contains interesting news, particularly about saying NO to violence against women, especially as September is the month when we remember that it is 127 years since women cast the first votes in Aotearoa New Zealand. There is also a list of kitchen equipment needed by WELLfed. Do read it to see if you can help.

Chris Garrett has provided advance notice of the Mary Potter Hospice Charity Golf Tournament which will be held on Friday, 27 November 2020 at Judgeford Golf Club. Here is the flyer. Any help you could give Chris and his team in finding Hole Sponsors and Raffle prizes would be greatly appreciated.

Snippets

Details about the Saturday session at Taupo Swamp are set out below. Holes had been dug for the 150 trees that are going to be planted (albeit full of water now from the torrential rain at the weekend) and Barry McEwen asked for volunteers to pop the saplings - that are already laid out beside the holes, with the planting. Bring your gumboots and be ready to start work at 9.30 am.

The Almoner said …

Almoner Rhondda gave us an update on Donna's health. She is very unwell but, despite three CT scans,  the doctors still haven't got to the bottom of her levels of pain. She is still in Wellington Hospital on antibiotics and pain relief  but may be leaving soon. We wish her all the best with her recovery.

What’s coming up in September, October, and beyond?

This is a weekly reminder to check out our Plimmerton Rotary Calendar which you can now find in the top right-hand corner of our Home page. If you use your mobile phone to access the Club's web page, turn your phone sideways so that the items that appear in the right column on a pc are visible.

6 October is Committee Night so there will be no speaker.

The next opportunity to help with planting and weeding at Taupo Swamp will be on Saturday 3 October from 9.00 am - midday. Remember to bring your gumboots, spades and weeding tools and as many friends as you can muster.

The next Friday Frolics will be held on Friday 9 October. Kay will let us know the venue in due course.

You can find future events on the Events page.

Parting thought

Jenny Lucas gave us the Parting Thought tonight. Very apt for those of us who sometimes speak before we think! 'Let all your remarks be favourable'!
