Visitors
Cris was, as ever, a very welcome visitor. He's joining in with club activities on every side, having conversations with young and old alike. Here he is, after the Porirua Primary School Leadership Awards, enjoying the company of some of the special guests at the 'after match function' at Peppermill, including, importantly, 'Ana Coffey's baby girl, Esther.
The Speaker said ...
There was no speaker tonight but Euon took a moment to congratulate the team who have been working tirelessly for several months to prepare for the Porirua Primary School Leadership Awards which took place on Monday 12 August. He described Wendy as a hard taskmaster but her efforts had resulted in a near-flawless production to honour our primary school students. He was kind enough to present her with a beautiful bunch of flowers, the message from which was clearly shared by the whole team who had worked like a well-oiled machine.
David Pine's article about the Awards captures the spirit of the occasion beautifully. When the professional photos arrive, more will be posted but in the meantime, you can read what he had to say about the event here.
Viewpoint
John Barber reminisced about his years in the building industry, from which he retired seventeen years ago. He remembered when 25mm was called an inch and when 100mm or 4 inches was the width of a wall. Tremendous changes are still going on and two of his sons are working in the industry today. He said that, if he had his time again, he would be happy to return to the industry which had given him so much pleasure. Euon commented that he remembered the days well when John would build house after house and he and Philip Whearty would have no trouble at all selling them!
This week's happenings
Donna reports that the school in Timor Leste has now been operating for some months and it is gratifying to see how quickly the parents, teachers and students, have started adding to the school’s impact on their community.

Two urgent notices:
Kay Phillips is looking for additional volunteers for this Friday's Myanmar Homework Club at the Salvation Army Hall at 89 Warspite Avenue, Cannons Creek from 4.30-5.30 pm. Games, instead of homework, are planned this week and extra pairs of hands would be invaluable. Please offer an hour of your time if you possibly can.
Bill McAulay reminded members that there will be a working bee this Saturday, 17 August, starting at 1.00 pm by the bridge that goes across to the sports field in Ulric Street, Plimmerton for the Friends of Taupo Swamp. He hopes there will be a good turnout but it won't be the last working bee if you can't make it this time!
'You may have noticed over recent weeks', said Peter Cox, ' that a small group meets after each weekly meeting. Tonight I can officially advise members that the Board has approved a unique and exciting project with the potential to substantially increase our income into our Trust Fund'. You can read more here.
