Visitors

President Bill gave a warm welcome to Dexter Traill. It was his second recent visit since his wife, Denise, was a member several years ago.

Viewpoint

Allan Nichols gave us his Viewpoint tonight. He said he believes that the post COVID era might throw up some interesting new opportunities as people settle down and rethink their priorities and that our Club must be prepared to recognise changes in our society so that we can benefit from those changes. From his perspective, he would like to ensure that everything we do strengthens the Club and very importantly – we have fun.

The speaker said …

New President Bill McAulay opened the year with a session entitled, 'Opening Opportunities in 2020 - the New Normal'. He set out his thoughts for the year ahead and then called on all club members to work at their tables to come up with ideas. It was a noisy and eventful session and Bill will discuss the outcomes with the Board and publish the details in the near future.

This week’s happenings

In a news release on 29 June, Porirua City Council said, 'The next round of work on the popular Te Ara Piko pathway will leave only one small section to complete, bringing the project very close to its goal of a safe path around the entire northern side of Pāuatahanui Inlet'.

He Huarahi Tamariki has published their newsletter for Term 2 2020 which covers their Prize Giving and Graduation 2019. It's a fascinating read.

WELLfed has just published its July 2020 newsletter and you can read it here. You will remember that WELLfed was the 2018 Regional Community Awards Rising Star Winner. They are still in need of contributions and/or donations.

You may remember supporting a raffle in aid of Wellington Children's Hospital recently. It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Whanganui in support of Rotary District 9940. The raffle has now been drawn and the winners are:

  • 1st Gina McKinnon, Auckland ticket 3074. Prize - $7000 of travel
  • 2nd John Hoggard, Fitzroy, New Plymouth ticket 5002. Prize - $3000 of travel.

Plimmerton Rotary is not the only club that is undergoing a change. Plimmerton Inner Wheel will celebrate its delayed Changeover on 28 July. Their theme for 2020-2021 is Lead the Change. Their new President is Brenda Callear and you can read a little about her background here.

The 2020-2021 Board and 2020-2021 Committee lists are both loaded as well. You'll find them a little further down the right column on the Intranet page (after you've logged in).

Snippets

Vice President Euon took the opportunity to award a certificate for work done on Te Ara Piko over the years (mostly exterminating vermin) to Bruce Couch who hadn't been present at Changeover.

Euon also presented Graeme Tongs with the  Certificate (not available last week) to go with his PHF medal awarded last week.

President-Elect Kay covered a number of exciting possibilities for the year ahead and sent round several boards so that members could express interest. She has since collated the responses and offers grateful thanks to the members who have supported the trip to Hawkes Bay and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. So far as the GWCTD event is concerned, she would welcome a hand to organise it. Please let her know if you can help.

In his role as Speaker Seeker, Nick Walmsley asked all members to think of ideas for good speakers to fill the calendar for the year ahead. He also drew attention to the new Google calendar which he has created and which is mentioned on the Home page for all to see. Anything that is organised throughout the year will appear on this calendar as time goes on.

What’s coming up in July and beyond?
