The speaker said …

This week’s guest speaker was Christine Hurley, of the Rotary Club of Wellington. Christine is on the steering committee of the Australasian Rotary Centennial Project, which is just completing the first of its three years. In addition to reading what Mike has written about Christine's talk, you can find out more information on the website and there's also a copy of her presentation here.

Viewpoint

Graeme Blick gave us the Viewpoint tonight. It was 'that technology can assist us in many ways in our everyday lives and bring tremendous benefits but we need to be aware of the risks of adopting these technologies that we have little or no control over. We must ensure that we have back-up systems in place or measures to mitigate any disruptions to services. Otherwise, we put ourselves at huge risk and potential cost should these technologies fail or be disrupted, either unintentionally or intentionally'.

This week’s happenings

On Saturday, 10 October 2020, about thirty-five people, Rotarians, Friends of Taupō Swamp, Councillors Euon Murrell and Ross Leggett, Council staff, their families, and friends, met at Plimmerton Domain and carried out a variety of tasks. About 1,300 plants are now in the ground. Euon passed on the good wishes of the Mayor who was unfortunately unable to come. You can see a report on the day's activities, together with some photos here. More photos will be in the Gallery shortly.

Barry McEwen asked for volunteers to come along again this Saturday, 17 October when he hopes that about 1,000 more will be planted. These will be Flax, Carrex and toi toi, none of which need to be protected so the work will be quicker.

Plimmerton Inner Wheel has had another busy month helping Mary Potter Hospice with their Street Collection and Rotary with the planting of the trees. Their October Newsletter is loaded here and you can read an interesting article about Days for Girls as well as information about their new District Project, 'Kits for Kindys'.

A reminder that Poirua Rotary has invited us to their annual fundraiser lunch for 'End Polio' to be held on Sunday 18 October at 12.00 noon at The Whitby Taj. If you would like to go, please contact Assistant Governor, Kath Beattie on kathryn.beattie3@gmail.com  Here is their flyer.

Snippets

Kay is looking for two more volunteers to help at the Love Local Expo being held this Saturday at Te Rauparaha, one each for an hour between 12.00-2.0. If you can help, please let Kay know.

The Almoner said …

Almoner Rhondda had sent an email from Donna to members, giving an update on her progress.

What’s coming up in October and beyond?

This is a weekly reminder to check out our Plimmerton Rotary Calendar which you can now find in the top right-hand corner of our Home page. If you use your mobile phone to access the Club's web page, turn your phone sideways so that the items that appear in the right column on a pc are visible.

Next week, 20 October, we will welcome the District Governor. A fun night is being planned and more details will follow shortly.

Remember that the following weekend, 23-26 October, is the Golf and Garden Weekend to Hawkes Bay. Activities will include golf, garden trails, and wine trails.

The next Drinks and Nibbles will be held on 1 November. You will notice that the date has been changed because of the Rotary visit to Hawkes Bayt. Chris will send details of the venue nearer the time.

Another reminder from Chris Garrett about the Mary Potter Hospice Charity Golf Tournament which will be held on Friday, 27 November 2020 at Judgeford Golf Club. Here is the flyer. Chris will appreciate any help you can give him and his team in finding Hole Sponsors and Raffle prizes.

You can find future events on the Events page.

Parting thought

Brian Greaves gave us the Parting Thought tonight with a quote from author, Orson Bean, who died earlier this year. ‘Miracles aren’t necessarily good for everyone. The parting of the Red Sea, great for the Jews, not so hot for the Egyptian soldiers.’
