The Speaker said ...
We would have gone to our Committees, but the Meeting was wisely cancelled so we all stayed home and waited for the rain and winds to lessen while our thoughts and prayers went out to those severely affected by the earthquake.
This week's happenings
Nick Walmsley's son-in-law, Tim, runs the Heretaunga Cooking School and invited our exchange student to attend for a day. Laurie was given a choice of what to make and came home with classic kiwi muffins and classic French mille feuilles. The muffins were as light as air and the mille feuilles could have come from a Paris patisserie. Bravo, Laurie!
There was more excitement for Laurie whose South Island tour was disrupted by the earthquake. Lynne Phillips reported that Roger Miller, their travel agent, did an epic job of rerouting them around the danger zone so that they could continue their tour.

A few members supported Donna Reed (sadly only 6 out of the 15 who had signed up for the event) on Sunday 13 November to help Discovery School in Whitby to run their annual X-Games.
Graeme Blick is canvassing the members about a social evening on Friday nights at the Co-op in Whitby commencing about 5 to 5.30pm with the possibility of staying for a meal afterwards.
Last week we mentioned that Darrell Phillips of Spinnaker Toastmasters had submitted an article about our Rotary Best Speaker Awards to Toastmasters International. We have decided to submit this story for insertion into the District Newsletter and possibly RDU as well.
What's coming up in November?
Next week's speaker on 22 November will be Noel Roberts, Technical Manager of Water New Zealand. It will also be a great pleasure to present Joy Allcock, leader of the Shine Literacy Project, with a cheque for $4,000, $2,000 from the Club and doubled with a matching grant from the District, towards the ongoing expenses of the project. Joy, and Professor James Chapman of Massey University, were interviewed by Kathryn Ryan on Nine to Noon on Tuesday morning.
Children's Christmas party at the Police College from 12.30-4.00 pm on 19 November. Help is needed so please contact Ian Turner on 237 4783 to volunteer.

And what's coming up after that?
Zonta are selling tickets for the Arohata Inside-Out Christmas Concert at 6.30 on 8 and 9 December. This a great fundraiser (suitable for primary school and upwards) and well worth a visit. Here's their flyer. inside_out_arohata_2016
The Christmas party will take place aboard Sweet Georgia on Tuesday 13 December (RSVP to Philip Whearty) and the AGM will be on the 20th.
The first meeting in the new year will be on 17 January 2017.
Inner Wheel's special Pizza and Plonk event will take place on Monday 23 January 2017.
District Conference is in New Plymouth in April and registrations are needed before December.
The World outside Plimmerton Rotary
On 20 November we can explore the opportunities our Club has to move from good to even greater. A Design Your Club Workshop will be held at Tawa College Staff Room from 10.00am-2.30pm. It will cover changes we can make to our Club (Council on Legislation, Club Constitutions and By-laws), Health & Safety and proposed changes to the District Constitution.
