President Denise called the meeting to order with the words, "Ka tangi, ka tangi, ka tangi. Overnight we laid to rest Queen Elizabeth II, recognise and celebrate her life of service. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Denise then welcomed our speaker, Nicola Kane  who creates business and life story videos that connect people. She also welcomed back from their holidays overseas Graham Craig and Allan Nichols

President's Notices

Denise reminded us that the Club Online Survey is due this Thursday 22 September. If you haven't completed yours yet, you may be able to meet the deadline if you're quick. in case you have mislaid the link, here it is https://forms.gle/fxtyhpdnFiCiPJVk7  (Just a hint if you're stupid like the editor - if you don't follow the instructions carefully, you can't move on to Page 2). There has been a steady stream of responses which collectively are providing some very useful information for the strategic work President Denise is leading.

There is a second survey which Phillip has sent out personally. This won't take a moment to complete as we only have to vote Yes, or No. This is the very important vote on the Zone 8 Regionalisation project. President Denise needs to vote on Monday reflecting the view of the Club so your input is essential.

This year's RYLA Programme will be run for the first time by the Kapiti Rotary Club. It will be held from 25-29 January 2023 at the Forest Lakes Conference Centre in Otaki. Please put on your thinking caps to nominate candidates who show leadership promise and would benefit from the encouragement and self-development that this intensive leadership programme offers. You may know people in your local business community who have young workers with leadership potential that they would like to sponsor onto the course.  You can find out more information on the RYLA 2023 web site

Denise has received a formal report for IYM Residential for 2022 with grateful thanks to our club for sponsoring a student to attend the programme in 2022. Forty young women from Greater Wellington took part and there's no doubt that all their lives were changed by the experience. IYM_Residential_Report_2022

The speaker said …

Nicola has been making promotional and instructional videos to help families to capture their memories and stories for future generations to enjoy. Read what she had to tell us about how she uses her skills. You can find out more about Nicola on her website.

Kay was sufficiently motivated following Nicola's talk to take a photo of herself on Wednesday and write a memory about it.

Viewpoint

Colin Whyte gave us a very comprehensive insight into "The Person Behind the Badge" this evening. About growing up in Christchurch and his love of sport, how he came upon the insurance industry and some of the fairly dangerous situations he has found himself in. You can read his full Viewpoint here.

What’s coming up in September and beyond?

Remember that Drinks and Nibbles will be happening this Sunday, 25 September. The venue is the home of Chris and Anne-Marie and everyone is welcome. Just make sure you let Chris know if you would like to come.

Next week our speaker will be Will Pennington, the Project Director of Kainga Ora - Homes and Communities (the old Housing NZ). He will be talking to us about the regeneration of Eastern Porirua.

Allan gave us advance notice of the next Guess Who's Coming to Dinner which will be held on Saturday, 29 October. If you didn't indicate your interest on the board Allan passed round, please let him know if you would like to take part. You can find all the details here

As always, you can find information about all future events here.

Area Governor Kay gave us a brief introduction to the role of the Area Governor. In case you didn't catch it all, you can read what she had to tell us here

Phillip covered three fundraising initiatives from the Communications Committee

  • You are still not to late to join the Ethify adventure. Talk to Phillip or Mike if you would like to participate.
  • Tickets at $5 each for the raffle are still available and will be drawn next week. There will be six prizes. One was displayed last week - a donation from Mana Pharmacy of a wonderful array of goodies, mostly for women. The next two prizes are a session in your home with Dr Mike who will check on your internet security. The fourth and fifth prizes are a drive with Wendy, National Chief Observer of IAM RoadSmart, who will check that your driving is as safe as it can possibly be (and you can opt to do the drive in her Tesla if you would like to). The final prize is tickets donated by Phillip to the Light House. You're not too late to buy a few tickets. And if you win a prize and really don't want it, you can sell it to the highest bidder. Proceeds from the raffle will go to Club funds; proceeds from any ensuing 'auction' will go to the Charitable Trust.
  • De-cluttering Delight is the final initiative. Find that elusive item or items in your home that you have been hoarding but honestly will never use and give it to one of the Communications Committee who will find a new home for it and give the proceeds to the Charitable Trust.  If you have some items you would be delighted to de-clutter here is the link De-clutter  to get the process underway.

This week’s happenings

The work continued at Porirua Gardens this week and there was a bumper crop. Nick, Tania and Wendy were the only stalwarts who turned up to help, despite Nick's invitation last week for members to come and see what goes on at the Gardens. The spinach is growing well and Nick's car was bulging as we loaded all the produce we had harvested which he then took to the Salvation Army.

Meanwhile, The Rotary Forest of Peace and Remembrance at Plimmerton Domain increased by another 4,000 plants and trees on Tuesday morning. This was largely because of a big turnout of volunteer staff from Porirua City Council plus 10 Rotarians and some community volunteers. All had a great time. This brings us to a total of 14,700 stems that have been planted since 2020, all of which have been chosen as being appropriate for planting adjacent to the Key Native Ecosystem of Taupo Swamp.

Planting_20-9-22_2 The planting was sped up by having all the holes pre-dug with augers. All the trees have been protected with a wool weed mat and a cardboard protector to help with wind protection.

We have about 800 more plants to get in the ground this year. We have a corporate planting day planned in early November with AIG Insurance and Conservation Volunteers NZ. Rhondda had been part of the team and, although she and Joe had to take a refreshment break when Tania and Wendy arrived late, she reassured members that the work hadn't been too hard, even for her.

Parting thought

Bill McAulay gave us the Parting Thought tonight with a quote from Sir Peter Blake. "The quality of water and the quality of life in all its infinite forms are critical parts of the overall, ongoing health of this planet of ours, not just here in the Amazon, but everywhere... The hardest part of any big project is to begin. We have begun. We are underway. We have a passion. We want to make a difference."
