Plimmerton Rotary Weekly Update

Tuesday 18 April 2017

No speaker this week

It's the third Tuesday again so members went off to do some future planning in their Committees.

Snippets

President Peter Cox welcomed Lucy Fierdehaiche, a French law student who will spend the next two months as an intern in the Environment Court, hosted by Wendy Betteridge, and guest Barry McEwen.
President-elect Jenny Lucas announced that we have two host families for 2017/18, for French student Amandine, but we need one more, and preferably two. Contact Jenny if interested.
Jenny also spoke about the Playable Porirua initiative, for which a training session has taken place. There are enough volunteers from our Club and from Inner Wheel. Playground surveys will be carried out over the next couple of months. The project team wishes to interview children (4-14), who have some form of disability, about their preferences for playgrounds. If anyone knows of such children please let Jenny know.
Peter Sinke reported on the progress of his grandson, Rhys, who is on exchange in France. He has now been there for three months and can understand most of what is said to him. He has visited Paris, skied in the Alps, and is currently in Prague. Most importantly, he has lost his shyness with girls. Bravo, Rhys!
Alistair Taylor has organised the speakers’ programme to the end of our Rotary year and is taking time off to deliver a yacht to Tonga. Safe journey, Alistair.

The Outside World

Rhonnda Sweetman was the Webmaster for Devonport Rotary who have just launched their new web site. Take a look. It's impressive.

Parting Thought for the week

David Pine said: “If you are feeling depressed, think of four things you can be thankful for. It’s impossible to feel depressed and thankful at the same time.”

This week's happenings

You can read what Mike Doig has written about the success of the Book Fair on 1-2 April. We are awaiting photos from the photographer who was there at the beginning and will upload those when they arrive.
The 2017 Rotary Best Speaker Awards will be held on 20 and 27 May. Julie McLagan is seeking all the help she can get to spread the word far and wide to potential participants so please encourage friends and associates to attend this inspiring event. Can you help?
And another event to diary is the 2017 Porirua City Secondary Schools Speech Contest being organised by David Knight and his team, which will be held on Friday 16 June.
