President Peter wished Phillip Reidy a happy birthday, which led to tasteless speculation as to how old he is.
The Rotary Best Speaker Awards are looming, with the event on 27 May. Julie McLagan urged members to attend. There are 15 entries for our Wellington Final, with the National Final to be held in Christchurch later.
On the same day - 27 May - Virtuoso Strings are holding a fundraiser quiz at Porirua College. Teams of ten may enter, at $10 per head. More details are available from President Peter.
President Peter mentioned that next week’s speaker, Kirk Hope from Business NZ, may interest a wider audience. Members are encouraged to invite guests. Be sure to book them in beforehand.

2017 Porirua City Secondary Schools Speech Contest. Another event to diary is the being organised by David Knight and his team, which will be held on Friday 16 June.
Alistair Taylor tells us that something is finally happening with his trip. He's rejoining yacht on Wednesday evening and clearing Customs at Opua on Thursday morning. Not sure yet if this means departing Thursday or Friday. Then possibly 6 days to North Minerva, 2 days stopover and 2 days up to Lifuka.

Tuesday 30 May - Chris Moore will speak to us about 'Caving in New Zealand'.
Tuesday 6 June - Paul Craven will tell us how SAR activity is coordinated within his vast region and how the distress beacon works.
The Outside World
Rotary is using virtual reality to inspire others. This film will be premiered on 13 June at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It will be widely released in time for World Polio Day on 24 October. You can watch this video here.
