Visitors

Vice-President Kay (standing in for President Denise) welcomed members to celebrate Niuean Language Week - Fakalofa Atu  Faahi Tapu he Vagahau Niue!  Hello and happy Niuean Language Week. She also welcomed the Reverend Lance Lukin, who was introduced more fully later and gave a warm welcome to Philip Mottram on one of his monthly visits.

President's Announcements

Kay reported that 20,000 Rotarians are expected to attend the Rotary International World Convention from 27-31 May 2023 in Melbourne.  It seems that only two of us will be attending from Plimmerton Club. We are lucky as we will be hosted by our Sister Club, Brighton North right in Melbourne.

The speaker said …

Mike's report on this week’s speaker is about the Reverend Lance Lukin, previously Chaplain to the Defence Force but now in charge of the Mission to Seafarers and Chaplain to the Port of Wellington, under the heading ‘how feeding your cat could be killing people’. Lance turned his talk full circle with a sobering commentary on the treatment of desperate fishermen from third world countries and encouraged us not to buy cat food with fish in it.

Person Behind the Badge

Tania told us a little about her background this evening. As is usually the case, it revealed a fascinating story as she weaved her way through the different phases of her life. You can read her story here.

What’s coming up in October and beyond?

Next week, 25 October, our speaker will be Gerrard Fasavalu,  Sportsman and Leader. Gerrard was the inaugural Wellington College Sportsman of the year 2018. He has an interesting story to tell.

On Saturday, 29 October, we will be enjoying another exciting Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, admirably organised as usual by Allan and Barb. Forty-five people have signed up and there will be six hosts. Both hosts and participants will receive their important instructions and you can find any other details you might need here.

To round off a social weekend, the October Drinks and Nibbles will be held on Sunday, 30 October. Chris will be sending all the details out nearer the time.

And advance notice of the Melbourne Cup Night on Tuesday 1 November. The bar will be open at 4.00, the Melbourne Cup will show on the big screen at 5.00, dinner will be at 6.00 and the fun and games of the Casino night will start at 7.00. There will be prizes galore and even more if you would be kind enough to bring one next Tuesday to give to Allan. Remember to bring cash! Everything you will have to pay for will be $5, so a fistful of $5 notes will be really helpful. You can find any other details you might need, including the formal invitation, here

Allan would appreciate some help at 3.00 pm on the day of the Melbourne Cup to help him to bring down the gear for this exciting night. Phillip has agreed to store it afterwards as Allan and Barbara will no longer have the space to store it.

And, as usual, you can find all future events for the remainder of the year on the Events page.

Snippets

Porirua Club is running the Christmas Wrapping at North City Plaza in the run up from 1 December until Christmas. We slipped up last year with our feeble offers of help so it would be great if we could redeem ourselves this year by offering one or more 'slots' of 2.5 hours to wrap gifts. We are looking for a volunteer to chivvy members and send names to Kath Beattie. Meanwhile, please let Kay know if you can fill a session. She and Wendy both have the roster. Proceeds are going to a Kindergarten in Titahi Bay so that's a very worthy cause.

This week’s happenings

Kay has captured the fun and fascinating time spent in Wanganui at the weekend as Plimmerton Rotary members and partners enjoyed their third annual trip away. You can read about some of the things they got up to here, as well as seeing some memorable photos.

The Almoner said …

News from some of our "wounded soldiers" tell that Graeme Blick is well on the way to recovery.

Graeme Tongs had a setback but was well enough to enjoy a rendition of Happy Birthday being sung by his grandchildren. He will be receiving visitors after his return home this weekend.

Inexplicably, Colin Whyte returned from Wanganui without a voice so we await news of its return.

Parting thought

Ann Scannell gave us the Parting Thought tonight with a quote from Socrates. "Silence is a profound melody, for those who can hear it above all the noise."
