In 2013 Emma Wicks, working with some friends from a Rotaract club, and with the support of Plimmerton Rotary, set up a trust with the specific aim of encouraging sport and recreation in the local area. They donated money for new basketballs and helped Naenae Primary School put up new basketball hoops. In the following year, Avalon Intermediate was given padder tennis rackets and new nets. $749 was left in the trust and as Plimmerton Rotary had supported Emma she joined us to donate the money to our trust fund for community projects.
Peter Lillico, on behalf of the District Travel Group, is looking for someone who is interested in hosting a Rotarian from Tanzania, due to come to New Zealand in November (dates not yet confirmed). He is interested in dairying, farming and recreational sports.
Thanks to all those who were able to make the time to help with Blood Pressure Testing on Saturday. This activity was happening all over the country with Rotary clubs participating. We had 'stations' at Porirua New World and Whitby New World. Porirua took 74 readings and recommended 7 people see their doctor and at Whitby 96 readings were taken with 5 people being recommended to see their doctor.
This week’s happenings
Denise Duke, who came to speak to us last year, is fundraising to replace two bamboo classrooms in Ghusel village in Nepal. If you'd like an evening out on 14 October, you can find out about it here.
You may have received the District 9940 October Bulletin twice. In case you didn't get either copy, here is the one to read.
What’s coming up in October and beyond?
17 October is 'speaker free' but that just means that we won't be having a visiting speaker. Instead, Barry McEwen and Rhondda Sweetman will be giving their short introductory speeches to members.
On 24 October, Hamish Davidson will talk to us about some of the recent developments in the secondary/tertiary sector, educational pathways, employability skills, and more ...
We will have a Rotary Pop up Shop in Hartham Place, Porirua from 13–17 November. We will be selling books, Gift Vouchers for the Garden Trail and Promoting Te Ara Piko as well as Life Education Trust. If space permits, we will also be fund-raising for International Woman’s Day by selling quality second-hand clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories. Volunteers will be needed for all hours during the week as well as setting up and packing up. Allan Nichols will update us further on this project next week.
In partnership with Zonta, we are invited to support an Inside Out Arohata concert put on by the Arohata Prison ladies on 7 and 8 December.
President Jenny mentioned a few upcoming events, which you can find on our Events page here. These included:
Melbourne Cup Carnival on 7 November 2017. Gates will be open from 4.30pm. when frivolous betting can begin until the race starts at 5.00 pm. The Rotary meeting will start once things calm down. Fashion in the field judging of the best ladies headwear will take place with the usual rules.
Rotary Grandchildren’s party on Tuesday 12 December
Allan Nichols encouraged everyone to start getting fit for the Book Fair which will run from 16-18 March 2018.
Parting thought
Nick Walmsley gave us the parting thought from Ronald Regan. 'We can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone'.
