David Grant is an award-winning historian based in Wellington. He has written13 books and a myriad of essays for anthologies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, journals and book chapters. In 1999 he was awarded Victoria University’s JD Stout Research Fellowship in New Zealand cultural studies.

His last major publication, 'The Mighty Totara: the Life and Times of Norman Kirk' was a short-listed finalist in the 2014 NZ Post Book Awards for non-fiction.

He has written a number of books on wartime dissent and his talk will be based around the 14 conscientious objectors who were taken against their will to the front-line on France in July 1917, why they were sent and what happened to them.

The best known of these 14 was Archibald Baxter.
