This event is based on the well-known 'Dancing with the Stars' but on this occasion, all the dancers at this event will be amateurs.
It has already been postponed because of Covid. Subject to the vagaries of the virus, the event will now be held at the TSB Arena in Wellington.
There will be 10 couples of amateur dancers. Each couple will dance different dances like Salsa, Swing, Jive, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, and Waltz. Couples will train for four months with local dance tutors.
Many dancers will be well known such as Andy Foster, the Mayor of Wellington, Martin Bosley, one of New Zealand's finest chefs, Jill Day, a Wellington City Councillor and Deputy Mayor, and two couples from retirement villages.
The event will be produced by Debra Swift, a well-known producer on TV1 and TV3.
Among the judges will be Susanne Paul, an English-born television personality and celebrity in New Zealand, who became famous for her Natural Glow product and roles as an infomercial hostess and television presenter, and Candy Lane, who has spent her life training, competing, performing, choreographing and producing quality entertainment both here and overseas.
There will be two levels of seating. 80 tables of 10 will be at floor level where dinner will be catered by Sarah Searancke Catering, well-known for catering weddings, events, and corporate functions. In addition, there will be grandstand seats for 1,400 people. The cost of each table will be $2,000.
Sponsors are vital to stage an event such as this and we are fortunate with those who have come on board already. Obviously more are needed and Les Callear, the Rotary project manager, will be glad to hear of others. The main sponsor is Summerset Homes. Others are Media Works who will do ads on radio and billboards, and Sport New Zealand. Each couple will be sponsored and contracts are being sent out to their sponsors.
Entertainment will be provided by Tina Cross and the Lady Killers. Since 2005, three of NZ’s favourite vocalists, Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch and Jackie Clarke have explored their mutual love of harmony singing through The Lady Killers. There will also be a Kapa Haka Group providing an emotional and powerful combination of song, dance, and chanting. In addition, there will be an auction, run by our own Euon Murrell.
Profits will be divided 50/50. Half will go to Life Education Trust. The remainder will go to Plimmerton Rotary Charitable Trust to be dispensed to the community, the majority of which will go to the new Wellington Children's Hospital.
