Visitors

Our speaker, Minister Ron Mark, was accompanied by one of his colleagues, Katie Lemalu. President Euon also welcomed Mok Freitas from Timor-Leste whom Vicki Poole had mentioned in her talk last week. We were also joined by Honorary members Peter Turner, Jim Dearsly, Ron Lucas, and, of course, Cris.

The Speaker said ...

Mike Doig writes, 'Last evening we had the pleasure of hearing Ron Mark's story, in particular because, from the age of three he had grown up in various foster homes, and made the best of it'.

Viewpoint

Rhondda Sweetman gave the Viewpoint tonight about Coeliac Disease, a condition that has had a huge impact on the life of her family. She urged members to be more aware of people who have Coeliac Disease and what it means for them.

This week's happenings

As a club, we may not have piled onto the Polio trains, but Donna and Adrienne did their share of fundraising at Wellington Airport last week in a very cold southerly wind, as Deirdre discovered as she passed by. Well done ladies.

There's been another change to member details. You can find the new membership list in the Intranet with both George's and Deirdre's details shown in red.

Snippets

Remember that there will be an exciting BBQ on Sunday 3 November but there's a catch. Attendance at the BBQ requires a serious workout, cleaning up the Pauatahanui Inlet beforehand. Please meet at Brown's Bay car park at 10.30 am wearing warm clothes and strong shoes or boots.

Sponsors and prizes are still being sought for the Mary Potter Hospice Charity Golf Tournament on Friday 22 November. Please do everything you can to support Chris for this event, coming up with ideas for sponsorship as well as prizes. There's lots of work to do to make this work.

Peter Lillico gave a plea to anyone who might have a couple of hours to spare between 10.00 am - 12.00 pm to volunteer for Meals on Wheels. If you have some time to spare, please contact Peter.

The Outside World

WHO has just declared another poliovirus strain eradicated. There’s one more to go. Once a leading killer of children, polio has nearly been wiped out by a global vaccination effort. Polio just got one step closer to becoming the second human disease to be fully wiped out. On 24 October, World Polio Day, the World Health Organization announced that type 3 poliovirus has been eradicated worldwide. This photo shows a vaccination team in Pakistan administers polio drops to children. Pakistan is one of two countries where the virus is still endemic.

What's coming up in November and beyond?

Next week, on 5 November, will be our Melbourne Cup Extravaganza. Remember to arrive at 4.00 for 4.30 if you want to have a punt. Put your best foot forward with your most fascinating fascinator or your best-dressed outfit. And bring those extra pennies with you for the Chocolate Wheel raffle for Polio eradication.

For all future events, go here. It's a very long way ahead, but you may want to check out the event on 18 February 2020 as it contains a rather compelling invitation to join a tour ...

Parting thought

The parting thought tonight came from George Bright, who said, 'The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.'
