Be very, very early next Tuesday! Car parking will be at a premium - although, of course, it will stave off dementia if you have to walk from the squash club. If you're not in early to place your bets, you might find there's a queue and you miss out. Somewhere around 4.30 pm would be good. Normal apologies for members apply.

The speaker said …

Phillip Reidy captured all that Emma Fromings had to tell us about dementia and the importance of keeping our brains healthy. You can remind yourselves about what she had to say here.

Graeme Blick updated us on the themes that had emerged from the comments he had received, not only from members of our own club but from others who had written to him from other clubs. Graeme is the District Representative on the Council of Legislation for the three years 2017 to 2020 and is required to collect comments from clubs and individuals and vote yes or no on the 38 resolutions on behalf of District 9940 by 15 November. One of particular interest is the resolution recommending that environmental issues be added to the 4-way test. Graeme commented to us that there are many ways that projects concerning the environment, wildlife or climate change can be fitted into the 6 priority areas without changing our 4-way test. Another important resolution is the requirement that RI dues be maintained at their current rate – or decreased. Graeme will certainly vote that the dues be capped at their current rate. There is another week before Graeme is required to send in his vote so you have until the end of day next Friday (10 November) to send him any comments. You all have the email with the details of the resolutions sent to you 2 weeks ago by Graeme Tongs.

Preparations are underway for our Pop-Up Shop, with Allan organising the books and Adrienne on the clothing side. We will be working with Inner Wheel on this. We need good quality pre-loved clothing and shoes which can be delivered to Adrienne at 20 James Cook Drive before next Wednesday (8 November) please. We also need to borrow any clothing racks for the week and, of course, we also need some assistance in the shop: 13 to 17 November 2 shifts 10 am to 1 pm or 1 pm to 4 pm. Please help us get the word out there about this fundraising event.

We have 34 children on the list for the Children and Grandchildren’s Christmas Party on 12 December. Have you let us know that your children/grandchildren would like to come? Contact Allan Nichols if you want to add children to the list.

Jenny read out a letter she had received from June Brady the widow of Adrian Brady who had been a member of our club. She and members of her family had been back to the area in remembrance of their time here that they had so enjoyed. June and the family have donated a seat for the walkway (now in place) as well as making a donation to our club. June thanked President Jenny for the hospitality shown while they were here.

The Outside World

Tens of thousands of Rohingya are still arriving in Bangladesh every day, adding to the more than half a million who have already fled across the border from Myanmar since August. Most left with almost nothing and have nothing to return to even if they could. Their homes have been razed to the ground, their possessions burned or ransacked.
ShelterBox is working in partnership with IOM to get our emergency shelter, solar lights, blankets and water carriers into Bangladesh and onto the camps as fast as possible. Response Member Jimmy Griffith was recently in Cox's Bazaar - the region of south-east Bangladesh where the humanitarian response is focused.

This week’s happenings

Denise Duke tells us that, armed with cosy clothes for the babies and toddlers, tools and money for the classroom rebuild, books, school supplies, pencils, stationery, craft materials, seeds for the farmers, and medicines, that she and Peter left for Nepal last week.

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

7 November would normally be a planning meeting and Directors can choose whether to hold meetings or choose another day during the month because ... Allan Nichols is organising a Melbourne Cup Extravaganza starting around 4.30 before the Big Race begins at 5.00 pm. If you want to be in time, buy your sweepstake tickets and raffle tickets, show off your fascinator or fascinating tie and of course to watch the race, make sure you're early. We have Tawa Rotary joining us. Kate Taylor will be our pre-dinner speaker, starting at 5.45. Dinner will be at the usual time. It is over to the committees to organise when they have their meetings.

Remember the GOPI Clean Up and Rotary BBQ this Sunday, 12 November. If you weren't at the meeting to sign up, please get in touch with Angus. You can find the details on our Events page.

Future events can be found on our Events page here. These include an event broadcast from the Rotary Club of Wellington - 'Singers to listen for 2017' on Friday 10 November and GOPI's Clean Up and BBQ on Sunday 12 November.
