Plimmerton Rotary Weekly Update

Tuesday 29 November 2016

The Speaker said ...

David Pine's story, 'War on Wasps' reported on Dr Eric Edwards' talk about recent developments in the control of  wasps.

This week's happenings

Once again David Knight organised the  excellent annual Parumoana Speech Competition sponsored by the Club  on 25 November with Sarah Jenner from Discovery School. You can see Chris Garrett's photos on the Gallery page and what Mike Doig had to say about the special occasionDavid thanked those who had helped with this, the 15th speech contest.  President Peter made special mention of Wendy Betteridge, who had provided tactful advice to the contestants at the end.

Peter Sinke’s grandson, Rhys, is to be our outgoing exchange student next year. He is off to northeast France, and gave us a run-through of the presentation he will make to his host clubs. Rhys is 16, and a boarder at St Pat’s. He is looking forward to his experience, and we are looking forward to hearing about his exploits over the course of 2017. Rhys was supported by several family members, his parents Chris and Fiona, his sister Myan and his grandmother, Linda.

Mandi Bates, the District 9940 Outbound Youth Exchange Co-ordinator from Kapiti brought outgoing student Grace Lindsay who is also going to France. She thanked the club for its hosting of Laurie Boytard and support for Rhys. She acknowledged the Club's continuing support of the International Youth Exchange programme.

President Peter noted that we had been thanked by the Salvation Army (for contributions to their foodbank), Pauahatanui School (for help with the Lamb & Calf day), the Blind Foundation (our collectors raised over $1000 last month), and Discovery School (for help with the X-games).

David Pine advised that the Garden Trail had been a great success despite rather mixed weather. 500 tickets had been sold and the proceeds should be around $18,000. You can read Phillip Reidy's report on the day and see the photos taken by Carolyn Wallace in the Gallery.

RYLA
Nominations are still being sought for RYLA (held in January 2017).  Do you know anyone in the 18 to 24 age range who would benefit from attending RYLA. Contact Bill McAulay urgently. RYLA is a high energy, concentrated leadership development programme for developing leaders between the ages of 18 and 24. RYLA seeks to recognise, encourage and develop future community and workplace leaders by offering them an intensive training experience. RYLA demonstrates Rotary’s commitment to developing future leaders by offering them a globally recognised programme.

The final report on Shine's Literacy Project will be released by Professor James Chapman of Massey University at a special function on Tuesday 6 December at Whitireia. The report is nothing short of amazing. It will appear in full on the Shine site next week.

The Financial Statements for the club and the Charitable Trust are now posted into the Intranet. You can find them here - remembering that you will have to log in to access the Intranet.

Also on the Intranet is the latest copy of the amended membership list dated 26 November 2016.

The November issue of the Our Porirua E-Newsletter has been sent out and is available to read here.

Peter Sinke has completed an enormous job, burning a dozen DVDs of the presentation he prepared for the Leadership Awards in September. Graeme Tongs has an original DVD if you would like to borrow it.

Wasp Eradication
Are wasps a problem? Did you complete the questionnaire that Leigh Corner circulated to promote a pilot community-based project to eradicate wasps in the Pauatahanui area?

What's coming up in December and early next year?

Mike Pryce, Wellington Harbour Master, will be talking to us next week on Tuesday 6 December.

The Christmas party will take place aboard Sweet Georgia on Tuesday 13 December and the AGM will be on the 20th. Please RSVP for the Christmas Party urgently!
The first meeting in the new year will be on 17 January 2017.

The Outside World

In 2016-17, The Rotary Foundation turns 100.
