David Pine has cleverly captured the key points of Chris Laidlaw's very informative address to us about a wide variety of subjects.

Snippets

Kathryn Beattie, President of Porirua Rotary, has invited us to go along to their meeting on Wednesday 2 May to listen to a talk from Craig Nicholson, Principal Project Manager for the Transmission Gully project. The venue is Phypers Lounge, 1 Lodge Place, Porirua at 6.00pm. If you are staying for a meal, please book this at the beginning of the meeting. President Jenny needs to give Kath numbers by 1 May so please let her know if you'd like to be included.

President Jenny asked members whether they would like to have soup instead of dessert with their meals as the winter months were nearing. The consensus was to remain with dessert.

Deb Mair drew our attention to the Facebook post from District 9940 that $11,500 has been raised for milk powder for the elephants in Borneo. It is hoped that some of the funds can be used to create tourist ventures to support the whole project with the pygmy elephants.

President Jenny told us that several Exchange Students are arriving from Auckland on Sunday 13 May. They want to look around Wellington for the rest of that week and need somewhere to stay. For those who have been wondering if you could offer help please wonder no more. Accommodation has been found for all of them.

The Almoner said ...

Graham Craig is home and recovering now after an unexpected visit to hospital (nothing to do with his knee replacement).

Noel Evans has had another short stint in ICU but is back on the ward and the doctors are pleased with his progress, although Meryll says it is slow.

The Outside World

After a gruelling year of preparation, two Rotarians and a Rotaractor face one last challenge before they can join the elite ShelterBox Response Team.

Visitors

It was great to see a large number of guests tonight:

  • Fraser Carson paid us a welcome visit.
  • Philip Mottram introduced Tania Woodcock for her first visit.
  • Kay Phillips returned for another visit.
  • Jessica Sebastian returned for a second visit.
  • Trevor Roberts, the founding president of Stokes Valley Rotary Club, now Hutt River Valley, came too.
  • Bryan Waddle brought along his son, Nathan and his partner Georgia.
  • And we enjoyed two of our more regular visitor, Chris Blick and Amandine, back from a lovely 10-day holiday up north with Jenny and Ron.

This week’s happenings

Alison Cox writes to thank those members who helped with the Red Puppy Appeal street collection on 25 March. She tells us that $598.30 was collected at Porirua New World. Good job!

Parting thought

Terrie Turner gave us a quote from a past President of the United States who said, 'A Government that is big enough to give you everything you want is a Government that is big enough to take from you everything you have'.
