Visitors

Acting President Bill welcomed members in President Denise's absence.

Viewpoint

Philip Whearty gave us a very erudite Viewpoint tonight to prove his point that it is unnecessary to await the research to prove what everyone already knows, that some changes are not fit for purpose, and someone, should occasionally look at the results.

What’s coming up in October and beyond?

Next week's social meeting will be just that - a social night. Come along and enjoy social time together. The only (important) business will be reports from committees and Board. If you have a winning raffle ticket bring it along and collect your prize.

And before you know it, the weekend of 14-17 October is the Garden and Golf Weekend in and around Whanganui. As it says here, much more information will be available in due course. Please let Kay know if you are keen to join this exciting adventure and haven't done so yet.

Our Annual Melbourne Cup and Casino Night will take pace on Tuesday 1 November. Allan Nichols and his team have a great night planned for you. We are inviting partners and spouses and several other Clubs so this one should be a truly interesting and fun night. The usual Chocolate Wheel and a raffle (the October raffle will be one day late...) will supplement the betting on the horses. After dinner there will be some casino games that everyone enjoyed so much last year. Come along and try your luck.

The Parumoana Speech Competition has appeared on the calendar on Friday 2 December. David will be telling us all more about this nearer the time.

What's been Happening This Week?

It's lovely to have all the news from Plimmerton Inner Wheel and you can read their October newsletter here

Ingrid Waugh Co-Chair Regionalisation Group Zone 8 reported on the result of the vote for a trial Zone Regionalisation project.
Thank you to all clubs who cast their vote in the Zone 8 Regionalisation pilot ballot.
We were delighted with the result with more than 89% of clubs across the zone expressing a YES vote.  This lets us know that there is strong support for a pilot which will enable us to trial, explore, design and evaluate a new regional approach to supporting and governing   Rotary and Rotaract clubs in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island region.
We are pleased to advise that 20 out of 21 Districts achieved the required threshold of two thirds majority of clubs voting Yes. The club vote was also endorsed by all 21 District Governors in their role as Rotary International Officers.
Whilst one district had more than 50% of clubs vote yes, it did not meet the two thirds threshold.
At this point in time, we will advise the Rotary International Board of the outcome as well as seek guidance on the path forward.  Thank you for your patience and we will be in touch once we have a clear course of action.

The Almoner said …

Almoner John Barber reports that two members of our club have had a spell in hospital recently. Wendy Betteridge had a small stroke, is now home and doing well, but unable to drive for four weeks and advised to rest and recuperate. Michael Parker was in hospital for a procedure and is now home and recovering well.

Graeme Blick and Graeme Tongs both had surgery planned for Thursday. John is sure that the Club wishes them all a successful recovery.  Graeme Blick is feeling really relieved and heading to a full recovery with the help of Bathhurst on TV  this weekend. In the meantime Graeme Tongs has been "put on hold" again as ICU beds are still all full.

Parting thought

Not just one, but two Parting Thoughts from Les Callear tonight. “I used to think I was indecisive but now I'm not so sure.” and “Will glass coffins be successful - remains to be seen”
