President Kay welcomed (Kia ora kotou katoa) everyone and gave a special welcome to our speaker, Rhondda Sweetman, and her husband, Les. She remarked on the rolling slideshow on the big screen which will be run each week during interludes at meetings. It showed photos of times past and, as well as bringing back memories of when we all looked much younger, reminded us of members who are no longer with us. The good news is that it will be different each time and if you have any material that might be suitable, irrespective of its age please let Phillip Reidy know.

The speaker said …Rhondda Sweetman was our speaker tonight. She gave us a fascinating talk tonight about how she and Les turned misfortune into a blessing and some of the exciting adventures they experienced in the process. You can read the full text of her story, and see some of the photos, here.
Viewpoint
ViewpointRoss Garner's Viewpoint tonight concerned the Commerce Commission's recently announced scathing draft review of the state of the trading of our supermarket industry. His view dealt with some potential outcomes and possible forced regulatory actions that might be applied to increase real competition between the major players. He also commented on the sophistication and complexity of these essential suppliers of food and other products throughout New Zealand. Only much time will tell how effective the outcomes of this major enquiry will be, he said.
What’s coming up in September and beyond?
The next Drinks and Nibbles will be held from 4.00-6.00 pm next Sunday, 26 September. This event will still go ahead, even if we are still at Covid Alert Delta 2 as we all know each other and legislation allows us to meet in groups of up to 50. Chris will let us know the venue when he knows how many people will be coming.
Next week, 28 September, Gina Sweetman (nothing like keeping it in the family) and Stewart McKenzie will be talking to us about 'Planning for our future - upcoming national and local changes'.
As mentioned in previous Updates, there are still uncertain times ahead. President Kay and Communications Director Phillip will continue to keep you informed by email if there is any news between Updates. Fortunately, everything is reasonably stable so they have been sitting back with their feet up (except President Kay of course)
In the meantime, you can go to the Events page or the Rotary Calendar at the top of the right column on the Events page, both of which will be kept right up to date. If you want to make changes or additions please contact Wendy for the Events Page, Nick for the Calendar for Tuesday nights, and Kay for the Calendar for social events and other activities.
Snippets
President Kay reported that Derek Oldershaw, Ian Turner, and Terrie Turner have accepted Honorary Membership of our Club. They were all delighted to be asked and wish all our members well.
Chris Garrett brought members up to date with the Golf and Garden Tour to the Wairarapa on 8-10 October. He has sent an email with the programme to all those who have registered. If you haven't received this invitation, please let Chris know.
Allan Nichols passed around a new list for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner scheduled for 30 October. If you missed seeing the list, please get in touch with Allan to add your name.
This week’s happenings
We have received an invitation from Tawa Rotary to join them next Tuesday, 28 September to hear a talk from Sir Bruce Reid Ferguson. Unfortunately, this clashes with our own meeting but members might like to join Tawa Rotarians, bearing in mind limited numbers during Level 2 Delta. Their invitation is attached Sir_Bruce_Ferguson_invitation.
Thanks to Secretary Graeme, the currently approved minutes of the Board and Charitable Trust are now posted on the Intranet.
Parting thought
Graham Wallace gave us the Parting Thought tonight. He said, 'The hay fever season is upon us and it may surprise you to know that parliamentarians are not exempt. Even our team leader, Jacinda, looked like she had a runny nose and watery eyes when she presented her daily campaign speech at 1:30 the other day. But hay fever can be a positive thing or a negative thing - as any parliamentarian will tell you, sometimes the eyes have it and sometimes the nose.'
