As it was Maori Language Week, President Kay welcomed visitors and guests as follows:
Kia ora kotou katoa. Ko te wiki mo te reo Māori. It is fitting that we have a representative of Ngati Toa here this week. Haere mai Dr Taku Parai, kaumātua for Ngāti Toa Rangātira me Chair of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangātira Board, as well as kaumātua for Porirua City Council. Haere, haere, haere Rotarians, partners and visitors. In addition to Dr. Parai, we welcome Honorary Members Christine Blick, Richard Sherwin, and Ron Lucas; and visitors Rachel McKinnon and past Assistant Governor, Adrienne Murray. Mā te rongo, ka mōhio; Mā te mōhio, ka mārama; Mā te mārama, ka mātau; Mā te mātau, ka ora, translated as 'Through resonance comes cognisance; through cognisance comes understanding; through understanding comes knowledge; through knowledge comes life and well- being.'
She concluded the meeting with the words, Haere ra Taku. Ka kite anō Christine, Richard, Ron, Adrienne me Rachel. Moe mai koutou katoa. (Good night Everyone).

The speaker said …After an exchange of preliminaries between Dexter Traill and Dr. Parai in te reo Maori, Taku (a Speaker of Ngati Toa) went on to describe his upbringing, the history of his Iwi, and what the future holds. You can read Mike's report here.

What’s coming up in September and beyond?
Next week, 21 September, we were to have heard from representatives from the International engineering, design, and advisory company, Aurecon, and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency who were going to speak to us about the progress that has been made so far on Transmission Gully and when the road might open. They have had to postpone and we will let you know the date as soon as we have it. Meanwhile, we are fortunate that Rhondda, who was to have spoken to us on 19 October, has agreed to step into the breach.
As mentioned in previous Updates, there are still uncertain times ahead. President Kay and Communications Director Phillip will continue to keep you informed by email if there is any news between Updates.
In the meantime, you can go to the Events page or the Rotary Calendar at the top of the right column on the Events page, both of which will be kept right up to date. Kay reported on decisions made at the Board meeting the previous evening:
- Colin Whyte is now a Trustee of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton Charitable Trust, replacing Tania Woodcock who,as noted last week,has resigned as a Trustee.
- The AGM is confirmed as Tuesday 9 November 2021, This is a Committee Meeting night as the week before is our Melbourne Cup and Casino night. Find all dates easily on our Club Calendar.
- Following the practice of previous years there will be no meeting on Tuesday 14 December 2021. The Club Christmas Party is later that week so dinner money will go towards members' Christmas party payments
- The Board has approved a donation to purchase four Emergency Rescue Kits or ERKS – two from the proceeds of 'Tuesday with a Twist', coupled with the Airport Regional Award prize, and two from general funds as the Club did not purchase any ERKs last year.
- Derek Oldershaw, Ian, and Terrie Turner will be offered Honorary membership.
There were other notices as follows:
- President-Elect Denise reminded members that International Polio Day falls on 24 October. We are liaising with Porirua Rotary to see if we can support a joint programme for that day as they often have a fund-raiser for this. Only Afghanistan and Pakistan are still reporting cases.
- Youth Director Colin outlined a request received from Aotea College who are seeking volunteer Reader/Writers to help students with disabilities, especially dyslexia, with their exams. If you can offer to help, please contact Donna.
- PDG Graeme made another request for possible candidates the Club can sponsor to RYLA, and/or the Science and Technology Forum, both in 2022. If you have any suggestions, please contact Graeme or Donna.
- Past Assistant Governor Adrienne gave an outline of a new project called A Million Masks. You can read about it, and watch the video to show you how to fit your own mask, here.
- Allan Nichols reported that the postponed Guess Who's Coming to Dinner will now be held on Saturday, 30 October. More details will follow when Allan knows the final numbers.
This week’s happenings
You'll remember the Charity Ball in support of a Breast Milk Bank that was to have been held last Saturday? Clearly, it wasn't! Fingers crossed, it has now been rebooked for Friday 15 October at 7.30 pm. This will only happen at Level 1 when more than 100 people will be allowed indoors. If that doesn't happen, the Ball will be moved to February 2022. Watch this space. Tickets are $45.00 pp or $450 for a table of 12.
