Visitors

President Kay welcomed members and visitors including Honorary Members: Christine Blick and Ron Lucas, Spouses and Partners: Brenda Callear, Glenys Greaves, Velma Knight, Barbara Nicholls, Sheryl Perera, Margaret Pine, Janet Reidy, and Linda Sinké. She also welcomed Bev Lillico and Bruce Phillips.

What a night!

President Kay says this was a highlight of her year. She thanked Allan first for initiating, and driving the event. Allan made all the games as his original set had been given away to a school several years ago. He is one of the many gems of our Club. Barbara, of course, is always right there in support literally helping to make money and typing lists, amongst other things. Philip Whearty, the amazing entrepreneur that he is, printed a great deal of money. The setup was led by Bryan, Allan, and Peter with several others. Bruce kept his treasurial (Yes, that is a word) eye on the financial side of the proceedings. Euon’s fantastic auctioneering skills saw bottles of wine being sold for a thousand dollars. The croupiers had a lot of fun hustling business for the various games: Rachel (Roll of the Dice), Graham Craig (Pontoon), Bryan (Roulette), Dexter (Chocolate Wheel), Bruce (Horse Racing), Kay (Two-Up) and Peter (Slater Racing, Technical Manager and Animal Trainer). A big thanks has to go also, to the punters. You were great – losing and winning large sums with abandon. Spot prizes were handed out. From a very strong field, Jenny Lucas and David Knight won the Best Dressed Woman and Man respectively.  Perhaps we should have had a prize for the best dressed/coordinated couple as there were several.

The buzz, laughter, shouts of triumph or dismay punctuating the balmy air were testament to a very enjoyable evening. All in all, an evening to remember. Thank you, Plimmerton Rotarians and visitors.

Although many of the photos were taken from behind to show members crowding around the various tables, they're fun nonetheless and you will doubtless recognise yourselves! You can find them in the Gallery

What’s coming up in February and beyond?

Next week we will hear from Helen Griffin, Country Coordinator for Days for Girls International

Friday Frolics will happen again this Friday 11 February at 5.00 pm until you want to leave. The venue this week will be the  Sandbar on Mana Esplanade. Passports, masks, and ID required for entry, please. Note: The Supply Room and Kitchen Co-op could only give us an outside table and rain is forecast.

There will be a Cooking Demonstration: Thursday 24 February. Hors d’oeuvres or Nibbles 2-4.30 pm $20 towards a Drowning Prevention Fundraiser which will be explained at the Demonstration at 24 Margaret Shields Avenue. The venue can only seat about 20 so it will be first in, first served. If we do not have a 'full house'  by Sunday we will be opening it up to other people.

Allan gave very advance notice that the next Guess Who's Coming to Dinner will be on Saturday 30 April. Mark your diaries now!

For all future events, go here.

Snippets

Kay thanked Ron and Jenny for all their hard work so far on the Porirua Garden. Please let Graham Craig know if y our name is not already on the list of volunteers.

Jenny asked members to let her know if they are interested in going on a half-day Fishing Trip in April so that planning can begin. The Social Committee also have plans for an evening on the Sweet Georgia in May. (Date to be confirmed).

Phillip tells us that Jo Maxwell, Manager Brand and Sponsorship, will come next week to present the certificate for our Wellington  Airport Regional  Community Award in the Sport and Leisure categoryMeanwhile, we are delighted to congratulate WELLfed for winning the Supreme award from over 270 nominations in the lower North Island. Camp Quality won the People's Choice Award which was a new category in the Awards which have now been running for 17 years. We ran a fairly extensive Facebook campaign to garner votes for the People's Award and this generated a significant number of comments so plenty of publicity for the Club has been a beneficial side result of participating in the Awards.

We have now received the February newsletter from Plimmerton Inner Wheel, which you can find here

The Almoner said ...

Annette Austing has suffered a brain bleed recently and is now in Rehab ward 6 at Kenepuru Hospital. John has visited her and she is recovering slowly but is in good spirits.

Graeme Wallace’s surgery was successful. He is now back on his bike and is feeling well.

Peter Jackson is coping well but keeping close to home and is happy to take phone calls.

Graham and Annette Craig’s Australian daughter-in-law passed away recently in Adelaide leaving behind the Craig’s son Simon and his two children. Our deepest sympathy goes out to them as they cope with not only their loss but the restrictions of a Covid climate.

While Angus’s mobility is not great he is in good spirits when I visit and I’m sure he would enjoy a phone call or visit from members.

Wendy visited Jenny Harris on Wednesday at Rita Angus in Kilbirnie and found her in quite a bit of pain. She would love to have visitors as often as possible and is grateful to the many friends who have been to see her.

Parting thought

David Knight gave us the Parting Thought tonight - an oldie and a (very) goodie!

'Whatever you give a woman, she’ll make greater. If you give her sperm, she’ll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit'.
