President Denise began her welcome with a quote from RI President Jennifer Jones, "Imagine a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day, knowing that we can make a difference”. She went on to welcome Barbara Edmonds, Mana MP since 2020, and partners Rhonda Walmsley and Lorraine Whyte.
President's Notices
Denise reminded us that August is membership month. This was a time to celebrate Plimmerton Rotary, its members and all the good you do in our community and around the world.
- Club Service – we have fun and share fellowship
- Communications – we support all the activities and keep the community informed
- Community – we get involved in our community
- International – we support global causes
- Youth – we share time and experience with young people, building our next generation of leaders
- Environment – our newest service committee – we sow in rangiatea, guardians of future environments
She proposed a toast to us, saying "Serving as your President, please raise your glasses to Plimmerton members past, present and future – thank you for your service”.
She also gave us an early Initial analysis of the member survey which showed:
- There was overwhelming support for the theme of membership
- All members feel welcome in the club
- Their experiences as a member is worth the time I give to Rotary
- All respondents agreed or somewhat agreed that they make a difference to their community
- 100% respondents agreed that our service projects are well-organised, they make a difference in the community or world and our service projects are meaningful to me
- Members shared some of the headwinds for us, diversity profile – reflect wider Porirua demographic, grow engagement with community, embracing faster pace of change.
An executive paper will be prepared for the Board and after and after consideration will form part of the strategic plan which will be shared with members.
The speaker said …
Barbara Edmonds was our speaker tonight. She is the electorate MP for Mana, taking over the seat from Kris Fa’afoi, who moved onto the Labour List at the 2020 election. Barbara described her commitments and movements in the current week, an exhausting schedule with little leeway to have proper meals or spend much time with her family. As Mike said in his report, "Two burning questions remain: how does Barbara fit it all in, and who in their right mind would want to be an MP?"
Viewpoint
ViewpointMichael Parker gave us the Viewpoint tonight entitled "Looking back and thinking ahead". He wonders if the adversarial system as currently practiced in Parliament suitable for our times of challenge and change. You can find Michael's full text here.
What’s coming up in August and beyond?
Our next Drinks and Nibbles will be held on Sunday 28 August at the home of Kay Phillips from 4.00-6.00 pm. Everyone is welcome. Please let Chris Garrett know if you are coming.
Our speaker next week, 30 August, will be Elijah Mareko who is representing the Mana Electorate in the Youth Parliament. This event is held every three years and involves 120 young Representatives. The objective is training, support, and the guidance of a younger generation in the NZ Parliamentary process.

District has bee asked again to spread the word about the Ethify Project throughout 9940 clubs. If anyone has any questions, please contact Phillip. It is worth noting the information you will have received encourages participation from family and friends with those who sign on before the specified date, not only receiving internet fibre at a special trial price but also, being eligible to be in the draw to win an iPad. Read the details and of course the offer applies to members as well. Those of you who are already using the platform are automatically in the draw.

This week’s happenings
President Denise reported that she, AG Kay Phillips, John O’Connell, and Colin Whyte had attended an interactive workshop exploring new club style models, rejuvenating existing clubs, new ways of thinking (or recalibrated ways of thinking for membership recruitment, retention, and growing our members). She is preparing an executive paper for the board with some thinking on rejuvenation.
Last Thursday the Salvation Army put on a “thank you” morning tea for organisations who support them. Of course, Graham is away but Bruce Phillips and Past President Kay represented our Club gardeners. After introducing their large team to us all, Nicky mentioned a few of the major supporters which included us. We all enjoyed a huge morning tea. Here is Kay with a few of their wonderful team.
