Important note: From Tuesday 7 December, all Rotarians, partners, guests, and visitors will be required to show their vaccine pass at the door of the next Rotary event that they attend. This includes children over 12. They will only be asked to do this once until the expiry of their pass, at which point they will have to do it again.

If you are having difficulty downloading your vaccine pass, you can go to your local Pharmacy for help.

President Kay welcomed members and spent a few moments on notices. She then welcomed Dexter to the microphone.

Viewpoint

Dexter Traill gave us the Viewpoint tonight, telling us 'things we may not know about him' and touching on fond memories of his life.

What’s coming up in December and beyond?

President Kay reminded members about the Parumoana Speech Competition, organised by David Knight, which will take place this year on Friday 3 December at Discovery School. He asked members to arrive soon after 9.00 am for a 9.30 a.m. start. We will be asked to sign in, show our Vaccine Pass (as the Traffic Light system starts on Friday), and wear masks throughout the competition. The judges will be Wendy Betteridge and David Pine from the Club and Darrell Phillips from Spinnaker Toastmasters.

Remember to let Allan know your numbers for the Children's Christmas Party next week, 7 December. Wrap your presents and label them in large letters and come along to join in the fun and laughter with Nigel the Magician and Father Christmas. Start time is 4.30 p.m., so please arrive at about 4.15 p.m. Thirty-seven children are coming - a record! (Of course, people who are not bringing kids are welcome too).

President Kay has cancelled Friday Frolics on 10 December and that event will begin again on 11 February 2022.

Please remember that there will be no meetings on 14, 21, 28 December 2021, and 4, 11 January 2022.

However, there will be an exciting knees-up at our Christmas Party at Judgeford Golf Club on Friday 17 February. You will have received your personalised invitation from Phillip so will know all the facts. If, by any chance, your invitation has gone astray, please let Phillip know right away.

This is the last Update of the year, so the editor wishes you a Very Happy Christmas and a happier and healthier New Year for everyone.

This week’s happenings

President Kay reported that we gave our usual awards to three Aotea students this year. Following from last year these are $100 each for Service Above Self – Years 11, 12, and 13. The Board has decided to make these book vouchers next year. We have received a note of thanks from the Principal's PA, Debbie Allan thanking us for our ongoing support of their senior awards.

The recipients were (pictured from left to right):

  • Kaela Stodart from Year 11, who was also awarded the John Clark Mathematics Cup.
  • Alycia Capes-Parr from Year 12, who was also awarded the Clark Whanau Trophy and is the Deputy Head Girls for 2022, and
  • Jemma Brisk from Year 13, who was the runner-up to Top Scholar and was also awarded the World Scholar Cup and Cameron Cup for Senior History.

The GOPI Inlet Clean-up duly took place on Sunday 27 November. There were lots of community helpers cleaning up with Phillip and Janet Reidy ( attempting to carry the standard set by Ian and Terrie Turner ) undertaking the traditional  sausage cook-up  for the hard-working helpers. They also did the usual flag run set up by Angus Langbein to mark where the bags of rubbish were to be left and collected from by Porirua City. It was a successful result for the Inlet itself and a worthwhile community project.

The inaugural Western Primary Schools' Speech Competition was a great success on Thursday 25 November at Titahi Bay Primary School. Eight students entertained and impressed with a variety of interesting topics and they presented the Judges, Wendy Betteridge, Bill McAulay, and David Pine, with the usual challenges at such an event. The eventual winners were Toby Benson-Tofts (a recipient of a Leadership Award in August this year) Maddy Tither, and Hana Twaddle. Under the eye of Deputy Principal, Jamie Merrick, the audience of many of the students was engaged and respectful, a credit to the school. Certificates for the place-getters and participants were beautifully designed and prepared by Phillip Reidy and presented by President Kay, accompanied by words of thanks. While the judges deliberated, David Knight gave an introduction to the history of the Parumoana Primary Schools' Speech Competition which has taken place in Porirua for the past fifteen years. Jamie expressed his delight that Titahi Bay School is forging a path towards primary students competing throughout the whole city.  There will soon be more photos to enjoy in the Gallery.

Parting thought

Graham Craig gave us the Parting Thought tonight. He said, 'for successful projects, it is important to always give credit where credit is due, as a person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected'.

There are no more duties this year - hooray! - so sit back and enjoy the holiday period and the events that are coming up between now and the end of the year!
