The speaker said …

There was no speaker tonight but committees got busy with their plans. President Kay mentioned that the Board will be considering anything arising from the Committee meetings at their meeting on Monday 11 October.

Viewpoint

Barry McEwen told us a little about the 'person behind the badge' both in and out of Rotary and summed it up by saying that 'life is for living - enjoy it while you can'. What good advice!

What’s coming up in October and beyond?

As we all know, the Golf and Garden weekend in the Wairarapa is coming up this weekend, from 8-11 October. If those going have any questions, please talk to Chris Garrett. President Kay wished all who are going a wonderful weekend.

A reminder that there will be no Friday Frolics this Friday, 8 October.

Next week, 12 October will be a Social Evening which is billed in the Rotary calendar as 'It's in the Bag'. Quiz Master Extraordinaire will be Bryan Waddle and you'll just have to come along to find out what is going to happen. Social evenings are always fun (and a bit noisy!) Bring along partners, friends, and guests to enjoy the frivolity and, importantly, lots of 'old school $$$s' for the raffle.

President-Elect Denise reminded members that World Polio Day is on Sunday, 24 October. Porirua Rotary is fundraising for Polio at Whitby Taj on Tuesday 19 October from 6.00 pm. If you would like to support this initiative, please ring Denise who has the details. Unfortunately, this clashes with our normal weekly meeting and we have a speaker that night. To support this initiative, Denise asks if members can bring a raffle item to the meeting on Tuesday, 12 October. Contributions will make up a gift basket which Denise and Dexter will take to the Polio fundraiser so that Porirua Club can raffle it.

In the meantime, you can go to the Events page or the Rotary Calendar at the top of the right column on the Events page, both of which will be kept right up to date. If you want to make changes or additions please contact Wendy for the Events Page, Nick for the Calendar for Tuesday nights, and Kay for the Calendar for social events and other activities.

Snippets

President Kay mentioned that the Blind and Low Vision Appeal will be held on Saturday 23 October at New World, Porirua. Honorary Member,  Peter Cox, will attend next week and will have the roster.  Please think about it and be ready to put your name on the roster.

Our newest school project will be a Primary School Speech Competition for Western Porirua which will be held on Thursday 25 November at Titahi Bay School. More details will follow nearer the time.

This week’s happenings

Nick Walmsley read a charming letter he has received as the 'belovèd sponsor' of Keo Kaknika, who reports on her progress in Cambodia. Keo writes that Covid has affected her life and that of her family but that, despite this, she continues to study Accounting in semester 2 of year 2, achieving very respectable marks while working part-time to help to support her family.

In case you didn't receive the September District Bulletin to catch up on the District news and see DG Mark's message, here's a copy.

Plimmerton Inner Wheel have sent us their October newsletter and you can read it here

Parting thought

Ann Scannell gave us the Parting Thought tonight. She said, ''Live life like taking a photo.  Focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if it doesn’t work out, just take another shot!'
