Visitors

President Bill gave a very warm welcome to the large contingent of visitors from Spinnaker Toastmasters. He welcomed President Gary Nicholson, Tony Cross, Darrel and Jenny Phillips, Dale Hartle, Johanna Lowe, Albertus Viljoen, Dave Cook, Jacqui Blackwell, Ron Blackwell, Ann Vansverry, and Megan Kloppenburg. He also welcomed Assistant Governor, Kath Beattie, past member Philip Mottram, Honorary members Les Austing and Peter Turner as well as two visitors introduced by Kay, Sarah Gibb, and Dallas New.

And, by no means a visitor, President Bill also warmly welcomed back Donna Reed.

There were many speakers …

There was a big turnout this week as we hosted Spinnaker Toastmasters, who demonstrated the elements of one of their regular meetings. You can read about it if you go to Mike's report here and can also see some of the photos.

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

Just a reminder that this Sunday 22 November we can take part in the 2020 GOPI Clean-Up of the Pāuatahanui Inlet. Please rustle up your friends and neighbours and register at Browns Bay Car Park at 10.30 am. Here is a poster that will tell you all you need to know. As usual, the event will be followed by a family sausage sizzle at 12.00 noon.

The Parumoana Primary School Speech Contest will take place at Discovery School on Friday 27 November. Judging starts at 9.30 am so it is a good idea to get there a little earlier to secure your place. All you have to do is to come, sit and clap! The speeches are always well prepared, sometimes funny, often surprising, and always impressive. This is a Rotary occasion so do come in support, and you'll be able to leave in good time to help Chris at the Golf Tournament!

Following the Speech Competitions is the Mary Potter Hospice Charity Golf Tournament also on Friday, 27 November 2020 at Judgeford Golf Club. Here is the flyer. Chris is still looking for hole sponsorship and raffle prizes so please let him know if you can think of anyone who might be able to sponsor a hole at $350 each. He will need the help of about twelve people on the day and would also appreciate donations of food for the BBQ

We have quite a good number of children coming to the Christmas Party on 1 December 2020, but it is not too late to do so if you have not put down the names of extra guests. Nigel the magic man will entertain both children and adults alike and of course Father Christmas will be on hand to charm everyone. Remember that everyone is welcome (partners are of course especially so) and any children you bring need not be family. If you want to add some names, please let Phillip Reidy know.

As usual, you can find all the details you need on the Events page here. Or you could look at last week's Update and you will find the poster there.

It is only 5 weeks until Christmas, and for some, it might seem ages ago and for others not so long, since our last Christmas Party. Whatever you think, it is time to party again at the Judgeford Golf Club so if you want to be there, RSVP with the number coming, by return, and we will look after the rest. Remember, members have already paid $25 of the ticket cost. Make it a night of friendship and fun to see 2020 away. In case you can't read Phillip's lovely poster, you can print this out.

Just a reminder that Kay has cancelled, or at least, postponed the PaintVine Event in early December.

Snippets

President Bill reported that the Board structure will be changing. Kay will now be in charge of Admin although Euon will remain on the Board. This is to combine the duties of Admin and Fellowship, which are so closely linked.

This week’s happenings

Donna has found the exciting news on Facebook that Le Art, the wonderful trio who sang at our Leadership Awards two years ago, has won the Kiwi Cover song contest. You can read a story here. The post says, 'Three self-described ‘broke, brown girls from Porirua’ are one step closer to their dream, after being announced as RNZ’s Kiwi Cover Song contest winners.

Graeme Tongs has received the promotion for the Rotary Christmas Puddings 2020. Here is the poster and here is the order form. If you would like to buy your Christmas Puddings this way, please order direct.

November is Foundation month for Rotary International. In case you didn't receive it, here is the District Governor's November message.

Parting thought

With all the excitement and after all the wonderful speeches, it is easy to understand why Tanya's Parting Thought was overlooked. If she had delivered it, it would have been, 'If you don’t like something, whether it be a process or situation, make a change – do something. And if you don’t get the results you want, do something else. Standing still or just accepting what is, is not an option.'

Who’s on duty for the next month?

Unable to do your duty? Please find a replacement and inform Graham Wallace.
If you're a late 'no show' please tell President Bill.
Please arrive at 5.45 pm if you're on Door duty or on Introduction duty to greet the Guest Speaker and be his/her host for the evening.
Need to apologise or bring additional guests?
Advise the Receptionist at Professionals before 10.00 am on the Monday before the meeting on 233 9955 or email paremata@dwre.co.nz if you prefer.
Please provide the name (and spelling if necessary). The same applies if you're going to be late.
