Visitors

President Denise welcomed a large number of visitors, many of whom had come to support our visiting speakers, Kirsten Parker-Evans and Rene Corner-Thomas. Supporting Rene were her husband Dave, and Lawrie's son Andrew. Supporting Kirsten were her husband Glenn, her children Alex, Ben and Maia, her sister Amadee and her children Anais and Cybele and Judy's sister, Lynne. In addition, Denise welcomed Judy Parker, Velma Knight and Dallas New, now a member of Hutt Valley Rotary.

Denise and Dexter were missing in action last week as they isolated with the Covid virus and she thanked Kay for stepping into the breach in her absence. She also welcomed back Allan who had suffered the same fate and Rhondda, safely returned  from her serious operation in Brisbane.

Viewpoint

Leigh Corner gave us a wonderful précis of "The Person Behind the Badge' tonight taking us all over the world and humbly slotting in his international accomplishments. He concluded with a beautiful poem by Dorothea Mackellar which expressed, he said, not just his love for Australia but similar feelings for his other two homelands.

The speakers said …

Kirsten Evans (née Parker) and Rene Corner-Thomas gave a wonderful summation of their experiences on Rotary Youth Programmes and the impact it had on their lives subsequently. While one went to the other side of the world, one stayed a little closer to home but nevertheless the experiences and life outcomes were similar. Nearly two and a half decades have passed since Renee and Kirsten participated. The world has changed but their view on the benefits the programme offers both the students and Rotary remains very strongly positive.

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

The next Drinks and Nibbles will be held from 4pm to 6pm on Sunday 27th November 2022 at the home of Graham and Carolyn Wallace. Please let Chris know if you would like to join the party

Next week, 29 November, Mayor Anita Baker will be our speaker. Mayor Anita has spoken to us before but she has just been re-elected for her second term and it will be interesting to hear what she has to say. In addition to hearing from Mayor Anita, we will also be holding our Annual General Meeting

David Knight encouraged members to attend the Parumoana Speech Competition on Friday 2 December at Discovery School in Whitby. Nine primary schools will send students in two age groups and history has shown that the speeches are of the highest standard. The competition, which our Club has sponsored for the past nineteen years will begin at 9.30 am and everyone is welcome.

Looking ahead to the Club Christmas Party on Friday 9 December, remember that Bob Austin has asked that members and guests bring a gift each to the value of $10. There will be a cash bar. The raffle is a Christmas Hamper so please remember to bring plenty of pennies in your hot little hands. Family and friends will be warmly welcomed so that we can have a great party to end the year.

As usual. you can find information about all future events here.

Snippets

Chris Garrett lamented the fact that weather had compelled him to postpone the Golf Tournament on Friday 18 November but announced that it would now take place on Friday 10 February. He will be glad if those who volunteered  for lst week's event will be able to make themselves available to help in February.

Chris is organising a number of Friendship Exchanges - both inward and outward. He will be providing more information nearer the time but the first visitors will arrive from Wisconsin, north of Chicago in May 2023. He will be looking for offers of accommodation for the visiting Rotarians.

Although the Master List for Christmas Present Wrapping gets updated almost daily, there are still some slots available on 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 December. Please ring Wendy to find out what times are available on these days and offer to fill at least one slot if you can spare the time.

Parting Thought

Bruce Phillips gave us the Parting thought tonight with a quote from Oscar Wilde. "You don't love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.”
