The Speaker said ...

This article, written by David Pine, is the 150th contribution he has made to our website. This is a major contribution to the club and unseen by many of our members though, fortunately, appreciated and valued by our community. Thanks, David, for another great story, this time about ways that Malia Kerekere of Wellington Free Ambulance, Heartbeat Trainer extraordinaire, told us how to deal with cardiac arrest.

It looks like we have a team of between 6 and 10 people going to Rotafest. Is there anyone else who would like to join us for jazz, wildlife discovery and fun with friends from across the district.

The Rotary Best Speaker Awards have been so successful over the last few years that we are very keen to ensure that it continues. Bill McAulay is looking for sponsorship for this event. If you know of an organisation that may be prepared to support the event to a maximum $3,500 please speak with Bill.

President Jenny has some raffle tickets on sale to support the final push for Polio eradication. All members are asked to sell a minimum of 2 tickets. Our club has been allocated 15 books or 150 tickets. We are so close to winning the battle against Polio. Sir Edmund Hillary would probably advise us to get on with it and “knock the bastard off”.

Peter Cox has spaces for two more people for the late afternoon shift of 1 hour outside Porirua New World on Saturday 24 March for the Guide Dog Puppy Appeal. Please contact Peter if you can help.

Dr Geetha Jayaram was one of three Rotary women who were recognised for their commitment to improving lives through innovative humanitarian projects at the World Bank and Rotary International celebrations of International Women’s Day on 7 March.

This week’s happenings

The Rotary Club of KauKau is holding a fundraiser for Polio in the form of a 'Master Brewers' Dinner' at the Banquet Hall in Parliament on 12 April. The guest speaker will be talking about 'what it will mean globally once Polio is finally eradicated'. You can find details on the flyer.  Parliamentary_Dinner

When Assistant Governor, Lee Wilkinson was browsing through the NZ Heritage Magazine this month, she came upon an item that mentioned Isaac Du Toit, a student from Pukerua Bay School whom she had noticed when he received a Rotary Leadership Award from DG Mitch last September. One of the reasons for his award was because he was instrumental in the establishment of the Pukerua Bay School Museum and that piqued AG Lee's interest. And he's at it again. You'll be fascinated by what he's achieved now as you'll see when you read the article.  Heritage_Magazine

What’s coming up in March and beyond?

The 2018 Book Fair is this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday 17-18 March.  Thanks to everyone who has offered to help, and a reminder that we need all hands on deck to make this a successful event. Set up starts on Thursday afternoon and the club will work as a team across the weekend to Sunday afternoon when we pack down.

Tuesday 20 March - Steve Lowe will talk to us about Angel Flight - improving lives, one flight at a time.

Tuesday 27 March - Les is preparing to welcome us to Whitby Bowling Club, this time with a twist. Check it out.

Sunday 8 April - X Games Discovery School - We have supported and assisted Discovery School for the last two years and they have asked for our help again - which we can give in a variety of ways. It has been a lot of fun and if you are able to spare the morning or afternoon (the whole day is from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm), please give Richard Sherwin a call. We need just a few more people to help with this event.

The Rotary Best Speaker Awards 2018 will take place on 26 May. Keep the date free.

Parting thought

Peter Sinke shared this thought with us. If you plan to go away travelling, put everything you want to take on one end of the bed and the money you will take on the other end; then put half your things away and double your money.

And Adrienne couldn't let this week pass without a quote she saw in February 2015, during a tour of London's Science Museum from Stephen Hawking who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday 14 March. "The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression," Hawking said, according to The Independent. "It may have had a survival advantage in caveman days, to get more food, territory or partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all."
