Visitors
With stuff to get done following the meeting, there were no visitors. But President Denise was delighted to welcome back from holiday, Chris Garrett and Joe Perera.
President Denise reminded us that September is Literacy month. Did we know that 776 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? That's 17% of the world's adult population. She directed us to a Basic Education and Literacy Rotarian Action Group (BELRAG) which you can read about here.
She also commended The Guatemala Literacy Project to us. This Project is working to reverse the country's low literacy rates and keep children in school. More than 800 clubs have been working on this project for 25 years.
Denise told us that, for a second year, Rotary International, Kiwanis International, Lions Club International and Optimist International are working together to celebrate and give back to our communities with a week-long service event to be held from 11-17 September. She encourages us to share joint service projects on social media and on Rotary Showcase.
President's Notices
There will be an additional Board meeting this month via zoom on 8 September at 6.00 pm to discuss the survey results and decide 'where to from here'.
The normal monthly Board meting will be via zoom on Monday 12 September.

Bill reminded us that 5-11 September is Conservation week. We have received funding from the Ministry of Primary Industries and Porirua City Council, who are promoting a planting day on Tuesday 20 September from 9.00-12.30 pm at the Rotary Forest of Peace and Remembrance. Come along and join the crowd. All Porirua City Council staff have been asked to participate. 10,700 plants have already been planted since 2020. The hope is to plant a further 4,000 on the 20th. The plan is to drill holes in advance and lay out the trees in position. There are plenty of different jobs - planting, making up the plant protectors, tapping them into place, taking photos and checking on those who are planting. Bring gumboots, a sun hat, water and snacks.

The Communications Team is in charge of the Raffle for September - an important way to augment Club funds and keep your subs as low as possible. We thought we'd do something a little different this month, as you can see from the flyer. All four team members will have raffle tickets available each Tuesday throughout September so you can buy yours at any time, including on the night of 27 September itself when prizes will be drawn. Watch out for Phillip, Mike, Rhondda and Wendy - they will be lurking! Tickets are $5 each and cash is great or you can pay on account. You can buy more than one ticket as the odds are good and the prizes will amaze!
This week’s happenings
Week after week, braving wind, rain and sleet, a group of hardy Rotarians turn up at Porirua Gardens to weed, plant, and harvest all manner of vegies to take to the Salvation Army Foodbank. Of course additional volunteers are always welcome, but we believe that most of the members have no idea what our Porirua Gardens project looks like. So, here's a warm invitation to all members and interested people to visit. Contact Nick if you would like to pop in - just to make sure that the gate is open.

Meryll Evans' cancer news is not as favourable as she was hoping, and she will be undergoing treatment soon. She doesn't need any additional help at present but we'll keep an eye out for her as time goes on.
