Snippets
Bill McAulay told us a bit more about the Rotary Best Speaker Awards that will be held on Saturday 26 May (see 'what's coming up'). Those Rotarians who have attended this event in the past have been struck by the courage, determination and creativity demonstrated by the participants. The Youth Committee will be there in force and he encouraged many more Rotarians to experience this very memorable event.
President-Elect Donna thanked all the people who had helped at the Discovery X games and said that it was a good way to showcase Rotary in the community.
She also mentioned that Ben Sawrey will be performing with the National Secondary School Choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral on Saturday 28 April at 7.30 pm. Tickets are $20 for seniors. If you would like to make up a group, please email Donna and add your name to her list. Kim Hill will be interviewing the Choirmaster on National Radio this Saturday after the 11.00 o'clock news.
PE Donna thanked David Pine for the words he had written about Greig Cunningham's presentation last week. She told the club that we are hoping to liaise with the Rotary Clubs of Porirua and Tawa to go for a grant for Balibo to contribute to the building of three classes for 120 children. Importantly, toilet blocks are going to be inside the building to reduce the chance of children being child trafficked and raped.
As part of WW100 - Remembering WW1 100 years on and ANZAC Day 2018, the Trust Porirua City Brass will be performing their tribute to the Anzacs at Elim Christian Church, 11 Heriot Drive, Porirua on Saturday 28 April from 2.00-4.00. You can find out more details here.
The Outside World
To reinforce what Tony Heyward had to say, rotary.org has been nominated for a Webby Award from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which called rotary.org 'one of the five best sites in the world in its category'. You have until the 19th to cast your vote for rotary.org here.
Visitors
We were delighted to welcome Jessica Sebastian, Managing Solicitor at the Whitireia Community Law Centre in Porirua. She came as the guest of Graeme Blick who is keen to help her to get a Rotary scholarship to study a Masters in Human Rights at Friedrich-Alexander Unversity in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany.
In addition to Jessica, Adrienne introduced us to Carey Church, a Rotarian from Cambridge.

Sir Peter Jackson's Quinn's Post Trench Experience is now open at the Pukeahu National War Memorial, 15 Buckle Street, Wellington. You can find plenty of information here. Next week, Donna will be asking for expressions of interest to do a tour with high tea (minimum of ten people).
In a stunning coup for the Porirua community, 15-year-old violinist with the Virtuoso Strings Orchestra, Tuloa Faraimo, who played a solo at the Sole Mio concert in Porirua recently, has just been offered an internship with Orchestra Wellington.
What’s coming up in April and beyond?
On 24 April, Chris Laidlaw will talk to us about his work with Wellington Regional Council. If you want to know more about Chris, you could get hold of his book, 'Somebody Stole My Game' in which he proposes that rugby is not sustainable if it continues down the commercial path it is currently following.
On Wednesday 2 May and Tuesday 8 May we are conducting mock interviews at Aotea College.
On 8 May, Dr George Allan will talk to us about The Art of Project Management.
On 15 May you can hear Dr Wayne Severn, a Drug and Substance Analyst, talking to us about training detection dogs in the detection of illicit drugs.
On 22 May, Ian Balme will talk to us about Forgotten World Adventures.

Parting thought
Barry McEwen gave us the parting thought. Bill Gates was at dinner in New York and gave the waiter a tip of $5. The waiter had a strange look on his face so Bill asked him what was up. 'On the same table', said the waiter, 'your daughter gave me $500 and her father is the richest man in the world'. 'She is the daughter of the richest man in the world', replied Bill Gates. 'I am the son of a woodchopper'. The moral: Never forget your past. It is your best teacher.
