Visitors

President Kay welcomed guests and visitors alike. Most importantly, she welcomed Lieutenant General The Right Honorable  Sir Jerry Mateparae, our speaker, and Heniaka and Mike August, our local Maori Wardens, here at the invitation of Michael Parker and our Club. She also welcomed Fran and Andrew Weatherly, guests of Wendy Betteridge; Honorary Members Christine Blick, Ron Lucas, Ted Nation, and Peter Turner saying that it's always great to have our Honorary members in attendance. She said it was also excellent to see partners and spouses, Annette Craig, Sue Couch, Glenys Greaves,  Barbara Nichols, Fay Raffin, Tony Sutorius, and Carolyn Wallace, And last, but not least, she welcomed Peter Sinke's guest, Nigel Brown

Heniaka gave a brief talk about the role of Maori Wardens. 'We work night and day', she said, 'and most of the work is done at night'. The young ones are not on the streets as much as they used to be. The relationships with the young ones, the Police, and the gangs, are good in Porirua. It used not to be as good as it is now. She stressed that the Wardens are there for all ethnicities, not just for Maori.

The speaker said …

This week’s speaker was Sir Jerry Mateparae, a distinguished New Zealander who is accustomed to talking and answering questions about his career as a soldier, diplomat, and of course, Governor-General. On this occasion he was relieved, he said, to tell us about his latest role. He is chair of the Board of one of the government’s National Science Challenges, which was set up in 2014 with funding guaranteed for ten years. The Challenges are mission-led, employ the best available research teams, embrace Vision Matauranga, and encourage stakeholders to set the research agendas. You can read Mike's report here.

Viewpoint

David Knight gave us the Viewpoint tonight about four important components he believes help with raising a happy and well-adjusted family.

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

Wendy Betteridge mentioned the Inaugural Western Primary School Speech Competition that will take place at Titahi Bay Primary School at Kura Street, Porirua on Thursday 23 November. Bill McAulay, David Pine and Wendy Betteridge will be judging the competition and Phillip Reidy has kindly prepared certificates for all participants and for the three pl;ace-getters. Members are welcome from 9.00 for a 9.30 a.m. start. Visitors must be double vaccinated.

Chris Garrett has notified the normal participants that the next Drinks and Nibbles will be held at the home of the President at 24 Margaret Shields Avenue from 4.00-6.900 p.m., on Sunday, 28 November. All members are, of course, welcome. Just let Chris know if you'd like to join the party.

Allan Nichols is once again organising the Annual Children's Christmas Party on 7 December. A magician and Father Christmas! What more could a child want?

The Club Christmas Party will take place on Friday 17 December at Judgeford Golf Club. This will be an evening with the usual entertainment - and more ...

There will be no meetings on 14, 21, 28 December and 4, and 11 January. The last Update for the year will be sent out on Friday, 3 December.

The New Year will begin for Rotarians on Tuesday 18 January with a social get-together. President Kay will send out an email with details at the start of the year.

Please remember to get in touch with Lindsey Wood if you can offer to take a turn at Christmas present wrapping at North City Plaza during December.

Parting thought

Tania Woodcock prefaced her parting thought by saying that Sir Jerry had touched on how the 'one size fits all' approach of our health system creates and perpetuates inequality.  It reminded her of some wise words on inequality from an American Lawyer by the name of Felix Frankfurter, 'it is a wise man who said that there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals'.
