With Planning Meetings to go to, there was no speaker this week.
Viewpoint
Clearly an art-lover, Gwen Hoople's Viewpoint touched on the movement of great works of art from Museum to Museum around the world, sometimes disappointing visitors by their absence. She suggests, however, that this might give people the opportunity to stumble on something new and unexpected that gives them pause, that sweeps them off their feet or maybe changes their perspective.

Do you fancy an interesting holiday destination in New Orleans starting on 17 February 2020? You can enjoy the culture, Mardi Gras, jazz, fabulous Cajun and Creole Southern food, Mississippi River cruising and all in the company of other Rotarians on a Friendship Exchange.
If you are thinking of going to "Ride the Train", you will need to answer this questionnaire for catering purposes and for Metlink/Capital Connection to have an idea of how many people to expect. Please return the completed questionnaire to Michael Fagg

Zonta Mana are inviting us to make up a party to attend the Inside-Out Arohata Christmas Concert 2019. The dates are 4 and 5 December at 6.30 pm at Arohata Prison, Tawa. Tickets are $25 each. Bookings close on 29 November.
Snippets
President Euon welcomed back Allan Nichols from holiday - just in time to organise the Melbourne Cup Night (see below)!
Euon also reminded members of the Art Auction at Pataka on Friday 4 October which will raise money for the Museum (Euon's the auctioneer). Some of the donated art is expected to raise a high price. There are still a few tickets left at $100 for two or $60 each. If you'd like to go, please get in touch with Euon.
Assistant Governor Adrienne asked for some volunteers to help for a 2-hour stint for the Blood Pressure Testing Day this Saturday, either at New World Whitby or at Pak'n'Save, Porirua (wear something warm at the latter venue as it's cold there). Please let Adrienne know if you can help.
What's coming up in October and beyond?
Next week, 8 October, Paul Wah will talk to us about the reality of the current economic/political situation regarding the China/New Zealand relationship, and the need for New Zealanders to learn more about China – its people-culture and history. His book, A Thin Slice of Heaven, covers aspects of recent Chinese history and culture.
In case you read your Update early last week, you may want to note that there are some changes to the additional speakers at the upcoming event on 15 October. This is a partners' night as Cris, among other speakers, will be speaking about Chile. Didn't he look smart as he prepared to leave for his Aotea Formal on Saturday 7 September (and he had a great time!)
Important Advance notice ...
There will be no committee night on Tuesday, 5 November. Instead, it will be Melbourne Cup Night! Allan Nichols, Organiser Extraordinaire, says, 'I am sure that we are all aware the great Melbourne Cup race is fast approaching. As with previous years, we will be organising a Melbourne Cup event at the Plimmerton Rotary Club. Since the race starts at 5.00 pm (NZ time ) and you want to participate in the sweepstake, you will need to arrive at the Cruising Club as early as possible and certainly by 4.30 pm . The evening is a partners' night and we will again have some fantastic prizes for the most ‘Fascinating Fascinator' as well as for the ‘Best Dressed Male’. Members of the Tawa Rotary Club will also be there and we normally get a good representation from the Cruising Club to join in the atmosphere. Dinner will be served probably about 6.00 pm and I am sure it will again be an evening with a lot of fun, so put it in your diary - Tuesday 5th November, Melbourne Cup Evening and partners' night.
