Visitors

We were inundated with a wonderful array of visitors. In addition to District 9940 Governor, Gillian Jones and our eminent speaker, Peter Miskimmin, President Bill introduced his daughter, Merryn; Kay brought along her neighbour, Sanjay Prasad; Bruce brought a friend, Andrew Wass; Peter brought a friend, Glynn Champion; Bryan brought along his son, Nathan (again); Donna came with her daughter, Joanne, her sister, Lyn and her friends, Avarille and Blue Paenga; Honorary member Christine Blick came along and so did partners Velma Knight, Glenys Greaves, Lorraine Whyte and Carolyn Wallace.

It was an evening with a difference. The Cruising Club caterers provided a smorgasbord of delicious titbits with great variety and members and guests mixed and mingled and enjoyed the buzz.

The speaker said …

This evening a sporting celebrity, Peter Miskimmin, was our guest speaker. As Mike reports, he is an icon in the world of international hockey, having played for 12 years and 150 tests for NZ and appearing at two Olympic Games.

This week's happenings ...

The latest Membership List updated on 25 July 2020 by Graeme Tongs has been removed until the cyber activity currently being experienced in New Zealand, dies down. If you want a copy of the membership list, please ask Graeme, Phillip or Wendy.

We have heard from Michelle Robinson of Partners Porirua telling us that a lot of Aotea College activities and programmes with the schools have been cancelled due to Covid-19. They are starting to reconnect with their partners slowly to see what can possibly be achieved in the short time that is left in this year’s school calendar. Many students (and teachers) are feeling quite anxious following the impacts of Covid. To cut a long story short, Pauline Muncey from Aotea has identified just one small class (about 18) year 11 students who would benefit greatly from some interaction and interviewing skills with some upstanding Rotarians (that’s you!). As the group is so small, we can potentially get by with perhaps three or four Rotarians. The time span is for a minimum period of 100 minutes from 1.30-3.10 pm and the dates they have suggested are either 22 or 29 October. Please let Donna know if you think you can help out.

The Youth Committee has received a donation of a sum of money to purchase clothing for children at an Early Childhood Centre in Porirua. The Board has now signed an Agreement with Whanau Manaaki the Kindergarten Association. Do you have contact with a children's clothing business? This could be a huge partnership. If you do, please contact Donna.

September is Rotary Basic Education & Literacy Month, so this is a timely month to make a stronger connection with the Myanmar Homework Club. On that note, our meeting on 15 September will be held in conjunction with the Wellington Myanmar Ethnics Association at 88 Hereford St, Cannons Creek. The event starts at 5.45 pm and should finish by 8.45 pm - a little earlier and later than our usual times. The Myanmar community will cook a Burmese-style hotpot meal. There will be musical entertainment from the Myanmar guitar group, refugee life stories from some of the Myanmar Community and an exchange of cultural dancing. It will be a  full programme designed to have maximum cultural interaction.

On Saturday 12 September at 10.00 am, President Bill will lead a walk around the area that we will shortly commence planting as the Plimmerton Rotary Forest of Peace and Remembrance. Meet in the car park between Palmers Garden Centre and Plimmerton railway station for a walkabout with Bill and Barry. This is an opportunity to see the planned planting plan for yourself.  It is also a good time to bring along non-Rotarians as future planters. Remember to bring your gumboots as the park is likely to be wet.

The Friends of Rotary Club of Plimmerton group is growing steadily. Current names will be announced after next week's Board meeting.

What’s coming up in September and beyond?

The restrictions in place to combat the spread of Covid-19 may put future plans in jeopardy. If any of the following events cannot take place, we will notify you by email.

This is a weekly reminder to check out our Plimmerton Rotary Calendar - which you can now find in the top right-hand corner of our Home page.

There's an ongoing invitation on the Events page to volunteer to help with planting and weeding with the Friends of Taupo Swamp. All future dates are set out, the next being Saturday 5 September from 9.00 am-12.00 pm.

Dr Swee Tan, Founder and Executive Director of the GMRI, will be our speaker on 8 September. Partners and other visitors are most welcome.

Poirua Rotary Club has made a decision to postpone any social events until we move back to Level 1. In the circumstances, the quiz planned for 9 September has been cancelled and a new date will be confirmed in due course.

The next Friday Frolics will be at The Supply Room at 5.00 pm on 11 September and the Club September Social Event is a visit to Brewtown in Upper Hutt on Saturday 19 September.

With the uncertainty that has been caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, the 2020 Book Fair, scheduled for the weekend of 3-4 October, has been cancelled for this year.

You can find future events on the Events page.
