The Speaker said ...

English Language Partners Porirua is one of several organisations around the country whose mission is to teach English to refugees, migrants and asylum-seekers. Jaqueline (Jaqs) Wilton, who heads ELPP, gave us some insights into the work they do which Mike captured here.

Visitors

In addition to welcoming Jaqs Wilton from English Langage Partners in Porirua, President Donna also welcomed Sheryl Perera and Anne Scannell, brought to the meeting by Philip Mottram and Mike Doig.

Viewpoint

Leigh Corner's Viewpoint provided a strong incentive to go and get vaccinated against Shingles. You can read the details here.

This week's happenings

Urgent! If you go here to order your 2019-2020 Entertainment Membership from the Inner Wheel Club of Plimmerton before Friday 14 June, you will receive a bonus $10 Caltex StarCash Gift Card. 20% of the proceeds from this initiative will contribute to fundraising for the Wellington Free Ambulance. Contact Carol Woodfield on 021 986 774.

President Janet Reidy has sent us the last Plimmerton Inner Wheel Newsletter for this Rotary year. It's a pictorial feast and there are a number of events you can put your name down for, their Changeover, A Fashion Show and their fundraiser screening of Yesterday. Enjoy the read.

In a letter to members worldwide, Barry Rassin, International President for 2018-2019 says, 'As I look back on all the things I have seen and the people I have met since becoming president of Rotary International last July, I am certain of this: Rotary’s capacity to transform lives for the better is unparalleled.

In case you didn't receive your June 2019 Rotary District 9940 Bulletin, here it is. June is Fellowship month.

Deb Mair sends thanks to the twenty-five hardy volunteers who helped to clean up Duck Creek on Saturday. The community cleanup brought volunteers together to clean and improve public spaces and streams around Whitby. Maori believe the health of the people is intimately connected to the spiritual force of the streams and rivers. When local residents and students feel a connection, then we are all in a better position to assist Mother Nature. Recovered by the volunteers were four cones, one tyre,  two carpets, a tent, two broken plastic chairs, three footballs, numerous tennis balls and twenty-three bags of rubbish from in and around our local waterway, stopping it from flowing downstream into the ocean via the Inlet. Our local tuna (longfin eels) were happy to see us and looked in good condition.

Here are the registration pages for the NZ/Australia/PI Regeneration Conference from 20-22 September 2019 in Christchurch, and the 2020 Rotary International Convention from 6-10 June 2020 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

News from the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg noted that Rotary volunteers contribute 45 million volunteer hours, worth US$850m to our communities. Figures from our club are included in that tally. Well done everyone.

Snippets

President-elect Euon reminded members that there will not be a meeting next week. The bus to Parliament leaves Mana Railway Station at 6.15 pm sharp on Tuesday 25 June (on the New World side) for the Changeover function. It is a set menu but if anyone has a particular dietary requirement, please let him know straight away. There will be a special Sergeant's session so bring plenty of money. It's a 7.00 pm start so we should be home by 10.30 at the latest

The Almoner said ...

President Donna reported that, according to her doctors, Terrie is progressing well and is starting to walk reasonable distances which is a significant achievement.

Madeleine (Red) Capewell's son, Ian has written to tell us that Red is now in full-time hospital-level care in Harbour View and family only are visiting her now. Her husband, Des, was President of our club from 1984-1985 and a member for many years. Red herself was presented with a Vocational Award in 1987-1988 and a Paul Harris Fellowship in 1988-1989. We wish her and her family well.

The Outside World

It was announced on 10 June in Evanston that Rotary is giving US$100 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year. This article shows which countries will benefit.

What's coming up in June and beyond?

There is no weekly meeting on 18 June. However, if you want to go to the Plimmerton Inner Wheel Changeover on Tuesday 18 June, be sure to let Janet Reidy know. You pay your $25 at the bar on arrival. There will be no Rotary meeting that night.

Another reminder to secure your ticket for the Wellington Forum on 4 July. Here is the site where you can obtain your tickets direct.

An advance reminder to put Monday 12 August into your diary when the 2019 Porirua Primary School Leadership Awards will take place at Elim Church from 10.30-12.00.

More advance notice that the US Ambassador and his wife will be our speakers on 30 July. This will be a partners' night.
