This week's happenings

Darrell Phillips, President of Spinnaker Toastmasters, has kindly sent us the story he wrote as a result of being a judge at the Rotary Best Speaker Awards on 28 May this year. His story was printed in the November issue of 'Toastmaster', a monthly magazine sent to the 300,000 odd Toastmasters worldwide.  toastmasters_story

Maraeroa Drinking Fountain
Kathleen O'Hare, Principal of Maraeroa Primary School in Cannons Creek, attended our meeting to express gratitude for the drinking fountain provided through our Grant A Wish initiative.  Previous drinking fountains were not robust enough for the conditions but this one has endured since its installation in July this year.

Aotea College Senior Awards Ceremony
On 3 November 2016 President Peter Cox attended the Senior Awards Ceremony at Aoteaa college. It is always an excellent display of senior students’ achievements along with some enjoyable entertainment. Two students, Hannah Creary (who was our attendee at this years Science and Technology Forum, and a participant in the Zonta Celebrity Debate) and Maisie Bentley (who won the senior award in the Wellington Pride Awards and will participate  in the United Nations Youth Global Development Tour next year) have both been visitors to our club during the year and have made a huge impression. We will hear their names more in the future.

Education and Information Centre, Mana
Members of Plimmerton Rotary are assisting Friends of Mana Island with research into a business case for this project. There is an Open Forum being held upstairs at the Mana Cruising Club on Thursday 10 November at 7.30pm for interested persons to learn more about the possibilities.

Men's Shed
Allan Nichols informed the membership that a venue has been identified in Porirua for a Mens Shed. It is behind the  old Wellington Beds shop. It has the support of PCC and also requires funding support.

Allan Nichols is also canvassing the membership about a social evening on Friday nights at the Co-op in Whitby commencing about 5 to 5.30pm with the possibility of staying for a meal afterwards .

Joy Allcock will be presented with a cheque for $4,000 to go towards the Shine Literacy Project. $2,000 has been donated by our Board and matched with a District Grant. Tune into Nine to Noon on Monday morning when she, and Professor James Chapman, will be interviewed by Kathryn Ryan.

And what's coming up after that?

Zonta are selling tickets for the Arohata Inside-Out Christmas Concert at 6.30 on 8 and 9 December. This a great fundraiser (suitable for primary school and upwards) and well worth a visit. Here's their flyer.  inside_out_arohata_2016

The Christmas party will take place aboard Sweet Georgia on Tuesday 13 December (RSVP to Philip Whearty) and the AGM will be on the 20th.

The first meeting in the new year will be on 17 January 2017.

District Conference is in New Plymouth in April and registrations are needed before December.

The World outside Plimmerton Rotary

On 20 November we can explore the opportunities our Club has to move from good to even greater. A Design Your Club Workshop will be held at Tawa College Staff Room from 10.00am-2.30pm. It will cover changes we can make to our Club (Council on Legislation, Club Constitutions and By-laws), Health & Safety and proposed changes to the District Constitution.

Thought for the week

“They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” Donald Trump, on Mexico, at a June 16, 2015, speech announcing his candidacy.
