Oh, What a Night!

The atmosphere was a-buzz at The Light House in Pauatahanui, not from the scheduled time of 5.30 pm, but long beforehand as members and partners congregated in anticipation of the movie ahead. Beautiful hot meat pies were provided (difficult to eat for those of us who had the temerity to eat them with our fingers, but totally delicious), followed by cold ice creams and an unexpected packet of assorted goodies. It was a fun-filled evening watching a somewhat 'different' movie which combined a great deal of James Bond-type fisticuffs, alarmingly skillful technical tracking on computers, interesting ineptitude of pseudo government officials, and great scenes from a variety of exotic countries. It was all very far-fetched, sometimes amusing and occasionally scary enough to make some members literally jump out of their skins. Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the three heroes lived to tell the tale, having killed off countless baddies without personally experiencing a scratch. A wonderful spoof! Our thanks to Phillip and his team at The Light House for transporting us briefly from the reality of Cyclone Gabrielle.

What’s coming up in February and beyond?

John Fiso (ONZM) will be our guest speaker next week, 21 February. John is the Chair of the Whitby Collegiate School Proprietors' Board. He is a philanthropist, a businessman and an educational manager.

This week’s happenings

District Governor Marilyn has announced the sad passing of Michael Fagg on Waitangi Day. Marilyn writes that Michael was the epitome of 'Service above Self' over his many years as a Rotarian, and many of you will have your own connections with and recollections of him. Most recently Michael was the District lead for End Polio Now and some of us had the pleasure of 'riding the train' with him.

President Denise is passing on an invitation from Wellington and Hutt Valley Rotary Clubs to share an evening with Past President Ian and Juliet Riseley on Thursday 23 February 2023 at Eastbourne Sports and Social Club. Tickets are $40 and you can find all the details here.  Ian_and_Juliet_invitation

And, in case you missed the earlier notifications, remember that Phillip and Friends (that's not our Phillip) are staging a concert on Friday 24 February at St Andrews on the Terrace. It's going to be a busy week for members who don't want to miss out on any of these great opportunities..

Donna reports that shopping is always fun for pre-school clothing when it's other people's money! Plimmerton and Porirua members combined to gather clothing for two local Kindergartens with grateful thanks to KMart as four trolley-loads of T-shirts, hoodies, undies, sweaters, trackies, leggings and skorts (skirts with attached shorts) passed through the till. Thanks are due as ever to the familyh in Wellington who have been so gracious with their donations, augmented with funds raised by both clubs.
