Past President Bill recorded apologies from both President Denise and Vice President Kay and welcomed a very small gathering of members to Committee night. He informed members that notification of an application for membership from Brett Jones would be sent out to members soon.

Following the meeting, members moved into their Committee meetings followed by some Event 50 meetings where appropriate.

Viewpoint

Rhondda Sweetman gave us her Viewpoint tonight about Vaping.  After embarking on some extensive research, her point of view was that we should be following Australia and restricting access to vaping products.

What’s coming up in June and beyond?

Remember that the Love Local Expo takes place this Saturday, 10 June. John explained that we have got a stand at the Expo which we will be 'manning' in conjunction with members of Porirua Rotary. It is close to the final exit at Te Rauparaha Arena, and everyone is welcome to call on the helpers during the day.

Next Tuesday, 13 June, the business part of the meeting will focus on Club Development and Membership, and specifically discussing the possibility of creating a satellite club. The District Membership Co-Chairs will be attending.

Given the likelihood of a small attendance on 20 June (which clashes with the Plimmerton Inner Wheel Changeover) members can celebrate in style on the last meeting of the Rotary year on 27 June which is a Robbie Burns night. Bring your partners / spouses / friends and relations for a fun evening of fun, laughter, singing and even dancing. There will be a reply to the Toast to the Lassies so it's important that lots of lassies attend!

As usual, you can find all future events, and the Rotary calendar, here.

Snippets

Bill congratulated Peter Sinke on the much improved sound system. He said that Peter himself has got new hearing aids and can now even hear himself speak!

Secretary Nick asked any member who is not receiving the RDU Magazine, either by post or digitally, to let him know as we are paying for every member to receive it and it's important that they do.

This week's happenings

Our Innovative Young Minds (IYM) candidate is Mia Poole from Aotea College. IYM would like to invite up to three representatives from the Club to attend two of their key events during IYM Residential, where there will be the opportunity to meet our sponsored student and hear about what they have gained during their time with IYM.

  1. Parliamentary Reception: 4.30pm - 6pm on Thursday 6 July 2023 - reception in the Grand Hall at Parliament, hosted by Hon Ginny Andersen and Chris Bishop MP.  Please see the attached parliamentary invitation.
  2. Student Graduation: 10.30am, Saturday 8 July 2023 at Silverstream Retreat, 3 Reynolds Bach Drive, Stokes Valley, Lower Hutt - our formal student graduation includes students presenting their work on the innovation challenge to a panel of industry judges, as well as receiving certificates for completing the course.

Please let Donna know if you would like to attend either of these bookings so that she can let IYM know.

Parting thought

Michael Parker gave us the Parting Thought from Carl Jung, 'Until we can get the subconscious mind into dialogue with the conscious mind, we are all subjected to fate.'
