In welcoming the visitors, President Denise gave us another quote from RI World President, Jennifer Jones, "Imagine a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day, knowing that we can make a difference”. She then welcomed Amy Baddington, who had attended the IYM event this year, and her father, Paul. Amy later spoke to the meeting about her experiences. You can read what Mike has written about what Amy told us here. Denise also warmly welcomed Honorary member, Chris Blick, and partner, Sue Couch.
President Denise called Jenny Lucas forward to present her with a certificate from the RI World President for 20 years of Service. In thanking her, Jenny mentioned some of the many projects in which she has been involved over the past 20 years.
Denise thanked all those who had been involved in stage managing the 8th Primary School Leadership Awards and quoted from Mike Doig's report last week, "Another splendid event for our local clubs: well-organised, well-attended, inspirational and a good showcase for what Rotary can do". Thirty-two primary schools participated and sixty-four students had been honoured.
The President thanked the Board members who met in person on Monday 15 August. She said that good engagement and discussion arose from committee reports and Directors will circulate the minutes to their committees when they become available. She reminded members to log into our club intranet to view Board and Trust minutes.
President Denise reminded us all that August is Membership Month. This coming Saturday, President Denise, AG Kay Phillips, John O’Connell, and President-Elect Tania Woodcock will attend a membership interactive workshop from 2 – 4 pm at St Andrews on the Terrace. They will be exploring new club style models, ways of rejuvenating existing clubs, and new ways of thinking (or recalibrated ways of thinking for membership recruitment, retention, and growing our members). As an aside, John is talking to Aspiring Wallpapers in Porirua about Corporate Membership.
Denise has re-circulated the Club Survey for our Strategic Plan (there is a two-week window for submissions). Please submit your views as Denise is keen to understand what you think and more importantly, to explore your suggestions.

There is no doubt that Dr. Mike Scott's talk last night left every single person in the room very afraid. To counter some of the perils of the internet, Mike recommends a best practice, defence in-depth strategy, in which we use protections provided by our software suppliers, and the use of strong passwords. Above all, we should be suspicious of incoming material, especially attachments to emails, and requests for private information even those coming from seemingly legitimate sources. This was a very sobering talk from an acknowledged expert in his field. You can read Mike Doig's report here.

Next week, 23 August, we will hear from Barbara Edmonds, MP for Mana. She will be talking to us about the Life and Times of an MP.
On Sunday 28 August, we can enjoy Drinks and Nibbles. Details will be available from Chris in due course. Everyone is welcome.
On the same day, Sunday 28 August, Tawa Rotary are holding their annual Car Fun Run starting at Tawa Junction Business Park in Surrey Street at 1.30 pm. It will be a directed 2-hour drive, with an opportunity to see some different parts of Wellington. The Fun Run concludes at 26 Oxford Street, Tawa with (a massive) afternoon tea. Entry is $15 with a maximum of $40 per car. The proceeds will go to Linden Primary School Reading Resources. RSVP or phone 04 232 6242 by Friday 26 August. Past-President Kay reminded us that the Ride the Train event will take place on Sunday 4 September. Full details were set out in a recent Update which you will find here. Polio has broken out in wastewater in more countries and this initiative, funds for which will go to Polio Eradication, is just one way in which we can all help.

Donna and Wendy modelled their Rotary jackets. Denise reminded members that these can be sourced locally and asked Jenny Lucas if she should would collect orders. A jacket will cost around $45 so if you would like to order one, please let Jenny know. While the jackets were modelled by two delightful models it should be noted that both female and male items are available. The designated male model forgot to wear his!
Peter Sinke talked about the new microphones and the new technology to go with them. There are a few changes to the setup each week to make this perform as required and Peter would appreciate some offers of help to learn the system so that several members can perform the setup, should he be away. If you can help, please let Peter know.

David Pine gave us the parting thought this evening. He is aware that people generally seem uneasy these days. He guesses that it's a combination of Covid and other events around the world. So he thinks this thought, which he heard many years ago is just right for our times: "If you ever feel depressed, think of four things to be thankful for. It is impossible to be thankful and depressed at the same time."
