Visitors

President Denise welcomed not only our guest speaker Mike Howard and his family but also friends of Donna Reed, to the meeting which looked like it was standing room only for a time.

The speaker said …

Mike Howard

Our speaker, Mike Howard, told an extraordinary story of courage and determination after a series of accidents left him with severe concussion. Read his story here

Person Behind The Badge

Kay

Kay Phillips concluded her 'Person Behind the Badge' talk this evening by saying that Education for her was a series of light bulbs flashing and that made the challenges we encountered seem trivial measured against the sheer pleasure of children learning.  She loved her time in Education and would happily repeat it all. Now her focus has become her family and her circle of friends. Along with the very interesting commentary Kay told the story of her Christian name duality so there were potentially "two" people behind this badge.

What’s coming up in May and beyond?

Clearly, there is no need to remind members that next Tuesday, 23 May, we will be celebrating 50 glorious years of Plimmerton Rotary at The Lodge, Pauatahanui. Start time is 5.30 pm for 6.30pm. It's going to be a great night. Everybody that expressed an interest in attending has been accommodated by juggling the arrangements at The Lodge. Remember to dress up as it is a night of glitter.

Postponement: the Orphans' Club will meet next month instead of this week.

As usual, you can find all future events after 23 May here.

Snippets

It was also noted by President Denise the sadness surrounding the fire in Wellington at the Loafers Lodge and the impact it would have had on the Fire and Emergency crews and the longer term impact on the the survivors.

On a much more positive note Denise hoped all the appropriate club members had had a very pleasant Mothers Day.

President Denise also noted it was time to get the process underway to choose a President to lead the Club during the 2025-2026 Rotary year. So if in due course someone comes along and asks you to consider being President give it serious thought as it is a beneficial experience for both the Club and yourself.

This week’s happenings

President Denise read a letter from DG Marilyn about the debacle that occurred at an Auckland Rotary Club. You can read it here.

Parting thought

Joe Perera gave us the Parting Thought tonight. He said he would like to quote his good friend, fellow Rotary and 500 card group member, David Pine, facing a 3-0 defeat and 10 minutes to go before 9.00 p.m. "The Night is still Young'.
