The speaker said …

In lieu of a speaker we had our two Annual General Meetings. The AGM of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton, ably presided over by Bill McAulay, followed the usual agenda including the announcement of our President Nominee who will be President in the 2022-23 year. Denise Traill, who was a popular choice, accepted this nomination gracefully. The 2019 Minutes were agreed to be a true and correct record and the financial report, presented by Treasurer Bruce Couch, was accepted by acclaim. Both Bruce and Secretary Graeme Tongs have agreed to continue in these roles for 2021-22. The minutes of this AGM will be made available to members in due course.

The Annual General Meeting or the Rotary Club of Plimmerton Charitable Trust was notable for its slick chairmanship by Euon Murrell. At the end of that meeting ,Lee Callear asked if the Club Board would resume the agreed practice of putting 10% of all funds raised into the Club account to cover administrative costs. Chair Euon said this matter would be referred to the Club Board.

This week’s happenings

The Parumoana Primary School Speech Contest will take place at Discovery School this Friday 27 November. Speeches start at 9.30 am so it is a good idea to get there by 9.00 am to secure your place. All you have to do is to come, sit and clap! The speeches are always well prepared, sometimes funny, often surprising, and always impressive. This is a Rotary occasion so do come in support, and you'll be able to leave in good time to help Chris at the Golf Tournament!

Following the Speech Competitions is the Mary Potter Hospice Charity Golf Tournament also this Friday, 27 November 2020 at Judgeford Golf Club. Here is the flyer. Chris is still looking for hole sponsorship and raffle prizes so please let him know if you can think of anyone who might be able to sponsor a hole at $350 each. He would appreciate any further donations of food for the BBQ.

What’s coming up in November and beyond?

We have 28 children (is this a record?) coming to the Christmas Party on 1 December 2020, but it is not too late to join in with the fun, so if you have not put down the names of extra guests please do so now. If you want to add some names, please let Phillip Reidy know.  Nigel the magic man will entertain both children and adults alike and of course, Father Christmas will be on hand to charm everyone. Allan has requested that presents are all named in large print as Father Christmas does not see as well as he used to! Remember that everyone is welcome (partners are of course especially so) and any children you bring need not be family. Do not forget to bring cash to pay for guests and the children or alternatively Bruce Couch will invoice you.

As usual, you can find all the details you need on the Events page here

It is only four weeks until Christmas, and for some, it might seem ages ago and for others not so long, since our last Christmas Party. Whatever you think, it is time to party again at the Judgeford Golf Club so if you want to be there, RSVP to Phillip at phillip-reidy@xtra.co.nz  if you are coming, or not, and he will look after the rest.  If you have already done so or you completed the board on Tuesday night you do not need to do anything as your response has been noted. Remember, members have already paid $25 of the ticket cost. Make it a night of friendship and fun to see 2020 away. In case you can't read Phillip's lovely poster, you can print this out.

Our 2020-21 District Centennial Conference is being held in Wairarapa on 19-21 March. Accommodation is short in Wairarapa so it might be a great idea to register early and also take advantage of the Early Bird price. Celebrity Chef Martin Bosley and Change psychologist Dr Paul Wood, both of whom I'd love to hear,  are confirmed speakers. Let's make this a Club social outing! You've told Kay you have enjoyed the ones we've had so far so let's resurrect this as a Club fun time. There's plenty to see and do in the Wairarapa as well as good speakers and convivial Rotary Fellowship. Golfers - refer to the golf dream auction below. The Saturday Night Dinner theme for dressing up is the year of your Club's Charter: 1973 in our case.

Snippets

Most of our notices this week were about forthcoming events but there are also a few action notices for you.

Phillip reported that the Pauatahanui Inlet Clean Up went well with Ian and Terrie, Jenny and Ron, Joe, Barry, and Graham joining him in helping. There were about 50 volunteers altogether. Most of the rubbish was at Brown's Bay and the Cambourne Walkway sections. GOPI, who organised the clean up, has received funding for a significant amount of planting around the Inlet and this will add to the restorative planting we have done over many years.

Phillip also reminded us of the Book Fair coming up in mid-February. This is planned to be a major fundraiser for the club and with all the books collected and sorted. It only remains to get them to the venue and sell them.

Busy with announcements, Phillip also told us that the concreting is finished in the Greys Road section of Te Ara Piko and, wonderful news, the Porirua City Council is funding the remainder of the pathway. The scheduled completion for the pathway is now mid- April 2021 so after nearly 20 years the north side project will finish and this will be a stunning result for the Club.

Denise is managing Christmas Cake orders this year so if you want to order please contact her directly by emailing denise@xtra.co.nz . I can vouch for them being very tasty and, as Denise said, a great gift for colleagues or people who've helped you over the year. At $20 these are a must!

Porirua Club members are organising Christmas wrapping at North City again this year between Thursday 10 and Thursday 17 December.. There are still several sessions needing to be filled so if you can help at all please could you email Kathryn Beattie at kathryn.beattie3@gmail.com  giving her your name, email address and phone number. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Carterton Rotary is auctioning, on Friday 4 December (for End Polio Now), a lovely Country Cottage with optional private golf course. This is booked for any two nights - 18/19/20 March to coincide with the District Conference. It is a 15-minute drive from Carterton. District Secretary Alan is open to bids on 022 101 5945 so if you want to have a chance give him a call.

Parting thought

Colin Whyte amused members with this parting thought: "Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them you are a mile away and you have their shoes."
