Mike Doig is seeking help for a Syrian family. Their two primary-age children are at Glenview School. The family is living in Tawa for the next ten weeks after being moved around Porirua several times. The principal would like the children to stay at Glenview to give them some continuity. Oranga Tamariki won't help with the additional costs of petrol to drive the children to school each day and they need help. The father is willing to do some casual work or members might be willing to donate some petrol vouchers. Please contact Mike if you can help.
A team will be going to Fiji from 11-18 August to help with some building work. A container is leaving New Zealand at the end of June with an assortment of items. The local people like t-shirts and shorts so if you have any that are surplus to requirements, please bring them to Rotary next week.

Adrienne told us that Joel Bowater is back in town and looking for casual work to raise money for when he goes overseas at the end of July. Many Rotarians can vouch for his flexibility and hard work.

Graham Craig's knee is much improved as is his general health. He hopes to be back at Rotary early in June.
Noel Evans is still in Ward 4 and walking with help. His health is improving too.
Ian Catherall is also in Ward 4 in Kenepuru.
We have news that Brian Paget, a former member who has now moved to the Wairarapa is very, very ill. David is sending a card.
The Outside World
Former First Lady of the United States, Laura Bush, an advocate for literacy, education, and women’s rights, will speak at the 2018 Rotary Convention being held in Toronto, Canada from 23-27 June.
Visitors
It was lovely to have another visit from Kay Phillips, who will join the Club on 12 June, Peter Oliver, guest of Bruce Couch from Havelock North, Julie Betteridge on her birthday, Velma Knight and, of course, Amandine.

Following the mention in last week's Update of the win in the Polio Eradication raffle that was drawn at RotaFEST, President Jenny called on Lesley Thompson to present her with the $5 note signed by Sir Edmund Hillary.

What’s coming up in May and beyond?
This Saturday, 26 May, is the Rotary Best Speaker Awards competition. We know that several members of Poirura Rotary will be coming. If you can come to support the contestants on this amazing day, ask Bill to send you a copy of the run sheet.
The next Wine and Cheese gathering will be from 4-6 pm on Sunday 27 May. Chris will be in touch with you on the day with details of where you're to go with your wine and cheese.
The CEO of Life Education Trust, John O'Connell, will be speaking to us on 29 May and we will be presenting him with the funds we raised for LET at the Book Fair.
And remember that Committee night on 5 June is the last in this Rotary year. Let's make it memorable before we hand over to the 2018-2019 teams.
On Wednesday 18 July, the Light House in Pauatahanui has been booked for a showing of the Balibo movie.
