To celebrate National Volunteer Week, some of my Kiwibank peeps surprised me by organising a special event to acknowledge my volunteering efforts. It was held at the Pauatahanui Lighthouse Cinema.

They were joined by fellow Rotarians and Helen Webber from He Huarahi Tamaraki with whom I have an association through a project started when I was with BPW Mana.

I was somewhat overcome and momentarily rendered speechless when the enormity of the tribute being paid finally sank in.

Toni KerrI cannot tell you how humbling it was to be acknowledged for the part that I play – especially when there are so many others who selflessly serve their community.

Last night I reflected that having alignment in my professional and personal life through Kiwibank and Rotary (both values-based organisations) has made it impossible to consider doing anything other than giving back. And while it is not about expecting anything in return, to be honoured by my peers was truly heartening.

Special thanks to Phillip Reidy for supplying the location and to all my fellow Rotarians who made it a night to remember.
